Gerrit van der Linde in South-Africa

This is the story of Dutchman Gerrit van der Linde who settled in South Africa. Gerrit was baptised on May 25, 1692, in Charlois (now part of Rotterdam) in The Netherlands as a younger son of Leendert Rooken van der Linden and Soetje Leenderts Vermolen.

Charlois
Gerrit likely left The Netherlands on January 18, 1714, as one of 63 soldiers onboard a ship called “Zandenburg”, but I don't know how he ended up early 1717 in South Africa.

Gerrit was married on February 7, 1717, in Drakenstein, Cape of Good Hoop, to Geertruij Putter. Geertruij was baptised on September 14, 1692 in Cape of Good Hoop. Witnesses were Zachrias Wagenaer, Diderik Putter and Maria Jansz Visser. Geertruij's parents were Dietrich Putter from Germany and Zacharia Jans Visser whose family originated in The Netherlands.

Gerrit & Geertruij were the parents of:
  1. Barbara van der Linde, bapt. January 2, 1717 in Stellenbosch,
  2. Soetje van der Linde, bapt. May 28, 1719 in Stellenbosch. Soetje was married on March 22, 1744, in Drakenstein to François du Preez, son of François-Jean des Prez and Marie Cordier. They had a daughter Maria du Preez who was bapt. on July 10, 1746.
  3. Leendert van der Linde, bapt. December 21, 1721 in Cape of Good Hoop. Leendert was married on April 9, 1751, in Cape of Good Hoop to Sara Lubbe. She was bapt. on December 19, 1728 in Drakenstein, Cape of Good Hoop. Her parents are Hendrik Lubbe and Catharina van Wyk. They had a son Adriaan Nicolaas van der Linde who was bapt. on August 3, 1760.

Tuesday's Tip - Check The Women's Ages

The genealogical software I use, Aldfaer, can produce a report showing the women in my genealogical file who gave birth to a child above the age of 44. With approximately 4150 ancestors in my file, it produced a list of 99 women.

What caused those - likely erroneous - ages?
  • Often the cause was that the woman's baptism was missing in the records, leading to a bad guess for the birth year, that could simply be improved to a more likely birth year.
  • A few times I had made typos - causing the birth year 10 years earlier than it actually was.
  • In another case I had to remove the parents: not only was the birth too early, but the children's names didn't match the grandparent's names either, nor was the source a reliable one.

Born at the Battle of Waterloo

The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday, June 18, 1815, near Waterloo in present-day Belgium, then part of the United Kingdom of The Netherlands. June 18, 1815, is also the birthdayof  Frederika Louisa Wilhelmina van Beusekom, daughter of Gijsbertus van Beusekom and Anna Verkerk, who gave birth "on the battlefield between Quatre-Bras and Waterloo". The Battle of Quatre-Bras had been fought on the 16th.
Gijsbertus van Beusekom was a soldier in the 7th battalion of the ground forces. Obviously, the baby girl was patrioticly given the same name as the Queen Consort of Dutch King William I, Frederica Louisa Wilhelmina of Prussia (1774-1837).

Rotterdamsche Courant, 5-6-1865
Saleswoman Frederika Louisa Wilhelmina van Beusekom (48) married Jean Paradies (51) on May 18, 1864, in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Jean was born on July 30, 1812, in Vlissingen, The Netherlands. Tuesday's Tip - Latin Term - Soror Patris

Soror Patris
When doing genealogical research, you may - once in a while - stumble upon some words of Latin. For centuries, the church provided for baptisms and burials, and Latin has been the standard for the Roman Catholic liturgy since the 6th century. In  this "Latin Term" Series I try to explain some Latin Terms that can be found in genealogical documents.

One of my ancestors was baptized in March 1696 in Hoornaar with the name "Pleuntje". Her parents were Ewoud Pelt and Lijsbeth Huijgen Ruijter. In stead of a witness, the Latin Term "Soror Patris" is written down. It means that the witness was a "sister of the father".

Tuesday's Tip - Latin Term - Nomine Uxoris

When doing genealogical research, you may - once in a while - stumble upon some words of Latin. For centuries, the church provided for baptisms and burials, and Latin has been the standard for the Roman Catholic liturgy since the 6th century. In this "Latin Term" Series I try to explain some Latin Terms that can be found in genealogical documents.

The Latin Term Nomine Uxoris ("in the name of the wife") is a term, used in The Netherlands in the early modern period (15th to 19th century), when a woman's belongings were registered in the name of her husband.

At that time a married woman was basically regarded as incapacitated - with her husband acting as her guardian. In the case of insanity or prolonged absence of the husband, however, his wife could - with the consent of her husband - act on her own.

Upon the death of a spouse, the children used to inherit from their deceased parent, but the

widow(er) was allowed the fruition of the inheritance as lang as (s)he lived.

Ancestor Score 2016: 76,4% of the 10th generation

Inspired by the Ancestor Score of the blogs "Connecting The Worlds" and "Heritage, Inheritance, & Legacy", I here present my own.

Geneanet defines the ancestor score as "comparing the number of possible ancestors with the number of identified ancestors on a 10-generation report". My ancestor score at generation 10 = 76,4%.

The total number of my known ancestors - starting with my parents (generation 2) - is 3884.

The decrease in ancestors in generation 7 is mostly due to cousins marrying cousins. The most common surnames of my ancestors are Van Driel, Spruijt, Oerlemans and Bos.
