Arie Toll (1834-1915) and his 3 wives

When Arie Tol married his second wife Neeltje Mouthaan, it was stated in the marriage registration that his father Aart was resident in Pella in the USA. Arie Tol was born on 25 August 1834 in Nieuw-Beijerland, Holland. He was the seventh of 14 children of Aart Tol and Neesje de Jong (1804-1850). While many of his siblings had died young, Arie survived. He was 16 when his mother died, aged 46.

When Arie Tol married his second wife on 10-10-1867, his father was in Pella.

Arie Tol was first married on 7 October 1853 in Heerjansdam, Holland, to Jannetje van der Mast. She was born 14 July 1827 in ‘s-Gravendeel, Holland. Her parents are Johannes van der Mast (1792-1857) and his first wife Adriaantje Naaktgeboren (1796-1828). They had 5 children before Jannetje died on 17 January 1867 in Rhoon. Holland.

Arie Tol was remarried on 10 October 1867 in Barendrecht, Holland. His second wife, Neeltje Mouthaan, was born on 18 June 1834 in Middelharnis, Holland. She was the widow of Cornelis Tulp, and had a surviving son of her first marriage named Simon. On 1 August 1869 Neeltje gave birth to a son named Arij who died after 11 days. Neeltje died on 12 September in Haarlemmermeer.

Arie Tol married his third wife, Arendje, on 11 July 1872 in IJsselmonde, Holland. She was born on 25 April 1849 in Ridderkerk, Holland. Her parents are Arie Zevenbergen and Neeltje Schilperoort. Arendje gave birth to 7 additional children. The youngest, Annetje, was born on 26 April 1888 in Zwijndrecht, Holland.

Somewhere between 1888 and 1896, Arie Tol and his third wife Arendje left for the USA. They were accompanied by Arie’s youngest daughter with his first wife, and the five surviving children of his third marriage. They settled in Pella, Iowa, and added an extra ‘l’ to their surname. Three of his daughters married three sons of Jan van Engelenhoven (1830-1915) and his wife Jansje Hessink (1834-1881) who originated in Ede in The Netherlands.

Teacher Leendert Bras (1828-69) in Haarlemmermeer

Leendert Bras was born on 22 March 22 1828 in De Werken in Brabant, southeast of Gorinchem in Holland. His parents are Leendert Bras (1793-1862) and Sijke van Drunen (1797-1874). Among Leendert's siblings were Bastiaan Bras (1819-1898) and Adriaan Bras (1830-1881). Their father worked as a workman, miller and innkeeper.

In Utrecht on 17 July 1850, at the age of 22, Leendert Bras did exams to become a teacher. He acquired a 4th rank as teacher on 29 April 1851. He was working as an assistant teacher in Utrecht, when he acquired his 2nd rank as teacher on 6 April 1853 at the age of 25. In the autumn of 1854 Leendert Bras was appointed as a teacher in a specialized Day and Boarding School for boys in Zuilen, west of Utrecht.

On July 17, 1850, Leendert Bras did his exam to become a teacher
Leendert Bras had been married on17 May 1852 in De Werken to Jannigje Pruissen. Jannigje was born on 28 December 1828 in De Werken. Her parents are Jan Pruissen and Hasia van Dijk. Leendert Bras and his wife were to have 11 children but 3 of them died young.
At first they lived in De Werken, but around 1860 they moved to Haarlemmermeer, a polder, consisting of land reclaimed from water. First, a 61 kilometres long canal had been dug around the lake to carry the water drainage and traffic. All of the pumping was done by steam mills, an innovation contrasting with the historic Dutch practice of draining polders using windmills. The first church was built in 1855. By 1860 Haarlemmermeer's population was 7237 people.
Leendert's father had died on 5 Janaury 1862 in Almkerk in Brabant. His mother remained in Almkerk until her death on 16 January 1874. Leendert died at the early age of 40 on February 14, 1869, in Haarlemmermeer. Six months later his widow, Jannigje Pruissen, gave birth to her last child, a daughter named Govertje after her brother Govert who had died the year before. Jannigje survived her husband for 26 years and died in Haarlemmermeer on 12 December 1895, aged 66.
Their daughter Anna was married in 1880, and had a son in 1881. On 9 May 1902 Anna and her husband and son left the Haarlemmermeer for the USA.

The family of Roel van Vuuren (1793-1859) in the USA

Roel van Vuuren, his wife Grietje and their 7 surviving children boarded the ship “Oscar” in 1848. After 6 weeks at sea, they arrived in the U.S.A. in June. Roel bought 600 acres of land north of the Little Calumet River. Historically, the Little Calumet River and the Grand Calumet River were one, the former flowing west from Indiana into Illinois, then turning back east to its mouth at Lake Michigan.
In the USA, Roel busied himself with farming, stock raising, and fishing. He is said to have been a tall man, while his wife was short.
Roel's children married into other Dutch families in the area. Two of Roel's daughters, Anna and Teuntje, married 2 brothers De Jong. Three other children married into the Gouwens family.

Roel van Vuuren was born on 1 September 1793 in Streefkerk, Holland, as a son of Lambert van Vuuren (1759-1845) and his wife Neeltje Huisman. Roel was married on 17 October 1818 in Giessen-Nieuwkerk, Holland, to Grietje Baardwijk. Grietje was born on 7 May 1797 in Giessen-Nieuwkerk as a daughter of Giel Baardwijk and Gerritje Huisman, a sister of Neeltje Huisman (see below).

Revisited - Barend Verkerk (1823-1905) and family

Recently I wrote about the marriage of Barend Verkerk (1823-1905) and his first cousin Aartje Verkerk who were both illegitimate children. Barend was a little man with a height of around 121 cm. His face and chin were rounded, and his mouth was small. His eyes were blue, his eyebrows were blond, and his head was bald. Because Barend was so small, he did not have to do military service.
AmmerstolHis height was not the only striking thing about Barend. Before Barend’s birth, the name Barend was not in use in the Verkerk family of Ammerstol and Bergambacht. Thus, it’s likely Barend was named after his unknown father.

What we do know is that Barend Verkerk was born on 28 June 1823 in Ammerstol as an illegitimate son of Geertje Verkerk (1793-1842) who had been widowed since 31 July 1818. You can find a small family tree of Geertje’s parents and grandparents in my previous blog post about Barend’s marriage.
We don’t know what Barend’s mother Geertje looked like, but she had 3 brothers who were described when they were conscripted for military service, and they all had brown eyes with black eyebrows and black hair:
  • Pieter Verkerk (1781-1855) had a height of around 150 cm. He was round-faced with a broad forehead, a small nose and a rounded chin. His eyes were brown and his hair and eyebrows were black.
  • Arij Verkerk (1784-1834) had a height of around 136 cm. He was narrow-faced with a flat forehead, a small nose and a rounded chin. His eyes were brown and his hair and eyebrows were black. He had rings in his ears.
  • Jan Verkerk (1799-1849) had a height of around 141 cm. His face was oval-shaped with a high forehead, big nose, and rounded chin. His eyes were brown and his hair and eyebrows were black. His skin was pockmarked.
At the WieWasWie.nl website I found one man with the Christian name Barend who was living in Ammerstol at the time of Barent's birth: Barend Zaanen. Barend Zaanen was born on 27 November and baptized on 3 December 1797 in Ammerstol. His parents are Anna Verschoor (1778-1809) and Willem Saanen (1772-1811). Barend’s great-grandfather is my ancestor Willem Saan.
At the age of 25, Barend Zaanen was married on 26 July 1823 in Ammerstol to 22-year-old Maria Verkerk who was heavily pregnant at the time. On 11 August 1823 in Ammerstol, Maria gave birth to a daughter named Aartje. Aartje may have been named after Maria’s father Arij Verkerk who had died in 1812.
Maybe Barend Zaanen got 2 women pregnant in the winter of 1822-23: Geertje Verkerk (aged 30, who named her illegitimate son Barend) and Maria Verkerk (22) whom he married.

Description of Barend Zaanen in 1823     Description of Barend Verkerk in 1850
Barend Zaanen had a height of around 137 cm. His nose was small, he had a rounded chin, his eyes were brown and his eyebrows and hair were dark brown. He had rings in his ears. People with brown eyes and a dark hair color can get a blond and blue-eyed child if both parents have some - more or less distant - ancestors with blond hair and blue eye. So, the difference in eye and hair coloring between Barend Zaanen and Barend Verkerk does not exclude a familial relation. What both men did have in common is a rounded face and a small nose. Barend Verkerk was around 15 cm smaller than Barend Zaanen, whose height was equal to that of Barend's shortest uncle, Arij Verkerk.

William Marius Branderhorst (1898-1976) travelled to Pella

William Marius Branderhorst of Pella, Iowa, was born on 17 December 1863 in Genderen, Brabant, The Netherlands as Willem Marius, younger son of Gerrit Branderhorst (1826-1911) and his first wife Peterke van Gammeren (1823-1866). Peterke died on 30 July 1866 at the age of 43, leaving 6 young children.
Widower Gerrit Branderhorst, aged 49, was married secondly on 15 March 1876 to 23-year-old Pieternella van Wijk (1852-1924). They had at least 4 additional children.
William Marinus and his father Gerrit are male-line descendants of an earlier Gerrit Branderhorst (1680-±1749) who is also my ancestor. The area where this line of the Branderhorst lived was dotted with 3 villages: Heesbeen, Eethen and Genderen.

At the age of 24, William Marius was married on 2 August 1888 to Maria Johanna van Beek. She was born on 30 April 1869 in Genderen as daughter of Gijsbert van Beek (1827-1900) and Emmeke Bax (1835-1904. Her brother Lambert Gijsbert (1867-1941) had earlier married Hester Margaretha Branderhorst (1861-1942), a full sister of William Marius.
Soon, approximately every 1½ year Maria Johanna gave birth to a new child. One of their children, Gijsbert, had died in 1898 at the age of 6.
After the birth of their 14th child, Lambert, William Marius and his wife and 13 children left The Netherlands on the S.S. Rotterdam. William Marius was already fluent in English, and travelled second class. On board he made acquaintance of the novelist Newton Booth Tarkington (1869–1946). Their ship with its 1,243 passengers arrived in the U.S.A. in 1908.

Longevity ~ Pieter Verkerk (103)

Pieter Verkerk was born on 2 March 1857 in Bergambacht, Holland. He was the 3rd of 5 children of Barend Verkerk (1823-1905) and Aartje Verkerk (1821-1862) who were first cousins. At the age of 5, Pieter lost his mother. At the age of 8, Pieter gained a stepmother, Johanna van Eijl (1824-1868). Pieter lost his elder brother Jan (18) when he was 15. Like his father, Pieter was exempted from military service due to his short height.

On 28 Febraury 1885 in Ammerstol, Holland, Pieter Verkerk married Arigje de Vries. Arigje was born on 28 September 1863 in Bergambacht. At the time, her mother, Jacoba Looren de Jong (1941-1926), was still unmarried. Eight months later, when Jacoba married Adriaan de Vries (1841-1928) on 28 May 1864 in Ammerstol, Adriaan acknowledged Arigje as being his daughter, and gave her his surname. Thus, Adriaan de Vries was Arigje's legal father, but that doesn't mean he was also her biological father. Arigje may have been named after her mother's father Arie Looren de Jong. Both her uncles Willem (1838-1931) and Huijbert (1843-1924) Looren de Jong had a daughter named Arigje, too.
On 3 August 1885 in Ammerstol, Pieter Verkerk and Arigje de Vries had a son Jan, but sadly he died on 30 September.

De Volkskrant (newspaper), 10-5-1960
At some point in time, the couple moved to Germany. There, Pieter Verkerk created and repaired fishing nets for a living. His wife Arigje died in Germany.
After World War II, Pieter Verkerk returned to The Netherlands. He met his niece for the first time, and stayed with her in Hoorn. At the age of 103, Pieter Verkerk died in Hoorn on 7 May 1960. He was buried on the 11th.

Sisters Pieternella and Peterke van Gammeren

The sisters Pieternella and Peterke van Gammeren were living in the 19th century in an area in Brabant, The Netherlands, with the villages Eethen, Genderen and Heesbeen. Their parents are Cornelis van Gammeren (1769-1845) and his wife Johanna Vos (1791-1869) who were married on 9 December 1814. Johanna is a daughter of Peter Vos and Petronella van Steenhoven.
The couple's eldest daughter was named Catharina after her paternal grandmother. On 5 March 1821 a daughter was born that was named Pieternella after her maternal grandmother. The next daughter was born on 6 July 1823, and named Peterke after her maternal grandfather. However, names like Pieternella, Petronella, Peterke, Pietertje, Pietje and Petra are basically different forms of the same name, a female version of the biblical male name Peter.

Eethen (left), Genderen (middle) and Heesbeen (right)
The first sibling to get married was Catharina van Gammeren (1819-1888) who was married on 27 May 1841. The groom was Gerrit Branderhorst, son of Dirk Branderhorst (1786-1864) and Aletta Antonetta Verdoorn (1786-1885), and a male-line descendant of my ancestor Gerrit Branderhorst (1680-±1749).
Catharina and Gerrit were to have several children, including Cornelis, Johanna, Aletta Antonetta and  Arie Lambert.

Pieternella van Gammeren, the second sibling, was married on 31 March 1843 to Jan Dirk van den Heuvel. He was born on 19 March 1817 in Genderen. His parents are Aletta Branderhorst (1793-1848) and her first husband Cornelis van de Heuvel. Aletta is also a descendant of my ancestor Gerrit Branderhorst.
Pieternella and Jan Dirk were to have 11 children, including Aletta Johanna, Johanna Cornelia, Cornelis, Cornelia Pieternella, Pietertje, Labina, Labinus and Jansje van den Heuvel (1859-1945).

Peterke van Gammeren, the third sibling, was married on 14 February 1845 to Hermen van der Beek. He was born in Waalwijk on 23 December 1816 as son on merchant Cornelis van der Beek and his wife Antonia Branderhorst (1790-1818). Hermen van der Beek died on 1 March 1855, aged 38. His widow was 31 years old, and childless.
Peterke was remarried on 27 March 1856 to 29-year-old Gerrit Branderhorst. He was born on 26 October 1826 as son of Johannis Branderhorst (1789-1865) and Hester Millenaar. Peterke's second father-in-law was a brother of her first mother-in-law. Those siblings Johannis and Antonia Branderhorst are also descendants of my ancestor Gerrit Branderhorst.
Peterke and Gerrit are the parents of Johanna Hester, Johannis Cornelis, Cornelis Johannis, Hester Margaretha, Willem Marius and Petertje Gerritje Branderhorst.

The disappearance of Cornelia Stolk

The Cornelia Stolk in this story was born in Rotterdam on February 23, 1800. She was the second child of Abraham Stolk (1779-1833) and his first wife Cornelia Koppen. She had 6 further siblings, but some of them died young.
At the age of 19, Cornelia Stok was married on May 19, 1819, in Rotterdam to Hendrik Zwartbol. He was the only surviving son of Cornelis Zwartbol and Anna van den Hoek. Hendrik born in Charlois (now part of Rotterdam) on February 8, 1798. His eyes were blue and his hair and eyebrows were brown.
The couple had two daughters, both born in Rotterdam: Johanna Cornelia on October 30, 1819, and Cornelia Hendrika on July 30, 1821. They grew up without a mother.
Relatives and acquaintances mentioned in a statement, drawn up in 1840, that Hendrik Swartbol and Cornelia Stolk had been living together for approximately five years, when Cornelia quietly left their marital home, and has not been seen since.

The eldest daughter, Johanna Cornelia, was heavily pregnant when she married Samuel Stead on September 9, 1840, in Rotterdam. Samuel Stead was a 40-year-old widower, born in Farnley in Great-Britain. Samuel had several children with his first wife Jannetje Verstraten (1804-38).
Just a month after their marriage, Johanna Cornelia gave birth to a daughter Cornelia Antonia Stead on October 12, 1840, in Rotterdam. Samuel Stead died in Rotterdam on December 1, 1841. They had been married for approximately 15 months. On April 14, 1843, in Rotterdam, while still unmarried, Johanna Cornelia Swartbol gave birth to a son named Johannes.

Hendrik Swartbol was working as a third class sailor in the navy, stationed on a ship named "Euridice", located in the port of Flushing, when he died on August 29, 1843. To be able to settle the inheritance of their parents, an ad was placed in 1851 on behalf of the daughters, trying to locate their mother.

Lijntje Boer (Puttershoek 1812 - Chicago 1891) married 3 times

Lijntje Boer originated in Puttershoek in Holland, married 3 times and died, aged 79, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. This is the story of her life.

Lijntje Boer was born on 7 March 1812 in Puttershoek, Holland. She is the 5th - but eldest (possibly only) surviving - child of Arie Boer (1774-1847) and Hilletje van de Graaf (1782-1849). Lijntje's grandparents are Arie Boertje (1725-1782), Pietertje van Roon (±1734-1778), Johannes van de Graaf (±1754-1830) and Lijntje Blankenaar (1757-1824). They were all living in Puttershoek.

On 29 September 1826 in Puttershoek, Lijntje Boer, aged 24, was married to Kleijs van Kleef. Kleijs was baptised on 5 April 1804 in Dordrecht. His parents are Arij van Kleef (1754-1833) and Maria Valster. Kleijs' elder siblings were baptised in Puttershoek. Lijntje and Kleijs had 4 daughters, but 2 of them died young. Kleij van Kleef died in Puttershoek on 1 May 1844, aged 40. Lijntje's father, Arie Boer, died on 12 January 1847 in Puttershoek, aged 72. Lijntje's mother, Hilletje van de Graaf died there on 25 May 1849, aged 67.

On 30 October 1850 in Puttershoek Lijntje Boer, aged 38, was married to Arij van Driel. Arij was born on 20 January 1817 in Strijen als the eldest surviving son of Gerrit van Driel (1748-1847). Arij's mother is his father's second wife Adriaantje Schaap (1785-1851). Lijntje and Arij had 2 daughters who died young and 2 sons who survived to adulthood.
In 1859 Lijntje's eldest daughter Hilligje van Kleef married Willem de Best (25). In 1865 Lijntje's second daughter Maria van Kleef married Aalbert den Boer (27). They became parents of a daughter Lijntje den Boer on 28 April 1867 in Strijen.

In 1866 Arij van Driel en Lijntje Boer decided to emigrate to the USA and they took their sons Gerrit (14) and Arie (12) with them. Arie died, aged 49, just before arriving in America. As their ship was going down the St. Lawrence River, it stopped at the Île d'Orléans to allow the Van Driel family to bury Arie there. Lijntje and her 2 sons arrived in New York on May 11, 1866.

Married Cousins - Barend (1823-1905) & Aartje (1821-1862) Verkerk

On 7 June 1850 in Ammerstol, Holland, two cousins, Barend Verkerk and Aartje Verkerk, were married. Besides being cousins, they were both illegitimate children, too. Both their mothers had died before they were married, so they had to show their death certificates to be allowed to marry. And that's how I know who their mothers were.

Barend and Aartje Verkerk had 5 children:
  1. Geertje (1851-1934) married (1) Leendert van de Werken, and (2) Hugo Walraad.
  2. Jan (1853-1872).
  3. Pieter (1857-1960) married Arigje de Vries, and died at the age of 103.
  4. Gerrit Verkerk (1859-1943) married Aagje Aaldijk (1861-1931), daughter of Klaas Aaldijk (1826-1897) and Neeltje Boers (1829-1903). Aagje is a paternal descendant of my ancestor Adrianus Aaldijk (182-1873).
  5. Barend Verkerk (1861-1896) married Arigje Kooij (1866-1913) and they are the parents of Gerrigje Verkerk who travelled to Australia.
Barend Verkerk was born on 28 June 1823 in Ammerstol as an illegitimate son of 30-year-old Geertje Verkerk (1793-1842), while she was in-between 2 marriages. Geertje's 1st marriage with Jakobus de Bruijn (1780-1818) had been childless. She was 2ndly married on 5 December 1824 in Ammerstol to Jan de Jong (1779-1836). With Jan, Geertje had 4 more children: Adriana, Neeltje (twice) and Aart de Jong.
Barend Verkerk was a little man with a height of around 121 cm. His face and chin were rounded, and his mouth was small. His eyes were blue, his eyebrows were blond, and his head was bald. Because Barend was so small, he did not have to do military service.

2 Sutherland sisters married 2 brothers

Anna Sutherland was born on 15-12-1819 in 's-Gravendeel, Holland, as a younger daughter of tailor Angus Sutherland (±1772-1833) and his wife Adriana Kraak (1784-1833). Anna was named after her maternal grandmother Annetje van Inslagen, wife of Jan Kraak.
Anna had elder surviving brothers George Christiaan (1812-1889), Jan (1814-1886) and Gerardus Sutherland (1818-1902). Her next sibling was a brother Hendrik Sutherland (1821-1893). Their youngest sibling was born on 10-3-1828 in 's-Gravendeel and named Dingena.

On 28-4-1849 in 's-Gravendeel Anna Sutherland (29) was married to workman Joost Rijkhoek (25). He was born in 's-Gravendeel on 29-7-1823 as the eldest son of Leendert Rijkhoek (1792-1852) and Susann Sint Nicolaas (1796-1880). Joost was named after his paternal grandfather, another Joost Rijkhoek (†1798) who was the husband of Annigje Klejnjan (1762-1825). Joost Rijkhoek and Anna Sutherland named their Adriana, Leendert, Susuanna, August, Annigje, George Christiaan, Leonardus and Hendrik.

On  9-5-1857 in 's-Gravendeel - 8 years after the marriage of Anna and Joost - their siblings Dingena Sutherland (29) and Jan Rijkhoek (21) were married. This couple had 4 children named Adriana, Leendert, August and Joost. Remarkably, both couples had a son named August instead of Angus. Also, both brides were older than their grooms.
Jan Rijkhoek was born  on 17-11-1835 in 's-Gravendeel as one of the youngest siblings of Joost. Jan had a length of just 121½ cm.  His eyes were blauw and his eyebrows and hair were brown. His face was oval chaped, his forehead was low, and his chin was round.

Maria Gertrudis Swakhoven (1870-1945) was placed under guardianship

Maria Gertrudis Swakhoven was born on April 8, 1870, in Sittard, Limburg, The Netherlands. Her parents are (Maria) Margaretha Clemens (1843-1917) and Martinus Hubertus Swakhoven (1838-1904). He was a son of Hermanus (Herman) Swakhoven - who may have originated in Cleves in Germany - and his wife Maria Ida Olmans who originated in Nieuwenhagen.

Maria Swakhoven was married on September 12, 1899, to veterinarian Leonard (“Leo”) van Kempen. Bride and groom were both aged 30. Leonard was born on September 1, 1869, in Echt, Limburg, as eldest son of Jacobus Hubertus van Kempen en Maria Catharina Elisabeth Hubertina Joosten.
After giving birth to 3 children (with one dying while still baby in 1905), Maria was - by order of the court in Maastricht - in October 1906 placed under guardianship due to “sillyness”. At the time she was pregnant once more.

Nederlandsche Staatscourant, 29-1-1906: Maria Swakhoven is placed unter guardianship
Apparently, Maria's “sillyness” was no reason for her husband to stop having intercourse with her, because Maria gave birth to a fifth child in 1908.
These are the children of Maria Swakhoven and Leonard van Kempen:
  1. Jacques Martin Leon, born on August 7, 1900, in Sittard. He was married on June 17, 1924, in Evergem, Belgium, to Suzanna Elisa Antoinette van Trappen. She was born in Evergem as daughter of Leonard Vantrappen and Emma Maria de Muijnck. Jacques died in Sittard on August 7, 1968.
  2. Maria Helena Margaretha Hubertina, born on April 8, 1902, in Sittard.
  3. Maria Elisa van Kempen, born on September 7, 1904, in Sittard. She died there on April 17, 1905.
  4. Josephina Maria, born on January 10, 1907, in Sittard. She died there on February 26, 1910.
  5. Piet, born on March 14, 1908, in Sittard.

Jan van der Linden (1838-1902) of Dubbeldam in Pella

Jan van der Linden was born on 26 April 1811 in Dubbeldam, Holland. His parents are Willem Willems van der Linden (1773-1822) and Maaike Aries Kleinjan (±1775-1822). Jan is a male-line descendant of my ancestor Dirrick Dirricxe van der Linden (±1620- ±1676) of Strijen, Holland. Jan's mother, too, is related to several of my ancestors.
On 5 February 1834 in 's-Gravendeel, Holland, Jan was married to Lijpje Moret. She was born there on 30 May 1813. Her parents are Leendert Moret (±1784-1865) and his first wife Maria Snijders (±1787-1823). In 's-Gravendeel Lijpje gave birth to six children in the period 1835-45, but two of them died young.

Rotterdamsche Courant, 6 April 1847
In Rotterdam in 1847, painter Jan van der Linden (36), his wife Lijpje (34) and their 4 remaining children Leendert (9), Maaike (6), Willem (4) and Marinus (1) boarded the ship "Nagasaki". The schip's captain was F.A. Bunnemeijer. Departure from Rotterdam was on 11 April 1847 with 239 passengers on board. Two persons died at sea, and one person was born at sea.
The ship’s cleanliness was not to Dutch standards. Almost immediately its inhabitants—both men and women—cleaned the ship from top to bottom. Religious services were held daily, consisting mostly of psalm singing. The ship passed the Isle of Wight on April 27. They arrived in Baltimore in the U.S.A. on 10 June 1847.
From Baltimore, the arriving colonists took the train to Columbia, Pennsylvania, where they were herded onto overcrowded canal boats. At Pittsburgh, they were transported down the Ohio River to St. Louis. Although the colony had lost a few members at sea and four on the trip from Baltimore, many more died in the extreme heat of St. Louis. Adding to their troubles were reports that had preceded them that the colonists were “possessors of great wealth”. Merchants over-charged them; townspeople came to gawk at them; and the colonists were worried about being robbed.
It was a curious procession of colonists that subsequently made its way to the Des Moines River valley.
As part of the prairie, wave after wave of grass grew as far as the eye could see, studded with wildflowers of every color. On 26 August 1847 they arrived at a place where stood a pole with a shingle nailed to the top, and on the shingle one word: "PELLA".

Pella, Iowa
In the U.S.A. Jan and Leipje seem to have had some additional daughters. For example, a daughter named Maria Aaltje was born on 31 March 1851 in Lake Prairie, Marion County, Iowa. Jan van der Linden died on 11 October 1895 and was buried in Pella. His wife had died 9 months earlier on 10 January. Their son Leendert was known in Pella as Lane VanderLinden (1838-1902).

Surname Saturday - Van Bodigem

The Van Bodigem surname had a number of different spelling variations like Bodegom, Bodighem or Bodechum. The ancestor of this family is Jacob Govertszn. van Bodighem who lived in the 15th century, and originated in Antwerp in Belgium. Van Bodighem is a toponym, a surname derived from a place name - in this case in Belgium.
When Jacob van Bodighem travelled north, he settled in Emelisse on the island Noord-Beveland. This village was drowned in a flood in 1520. Long before that happened, Jacob had moved to Delft in Holland.
Delft around 1536
Jacob was married to Neltge, daughter of Gerrit Waellincxensz van der Seijst. They had two sons named Willem and Jacob ( †1512). Willem married Maria, a daughter of Johan van Hogerwoert and Margrieta van der Poel. They had several children, including sons Frans and Rochus. Frans married Maria van Seijst and they had 6 children before she died on xxviiij september 1532 in Delft. Frans was mentioned as a brewer, and as a care taker of an old men's house and an orphanage. Frans was buried on 12 April 1560 in Delft.

Frans' son Johan van Bodighem (1514-1581) was a bailiff, first of of Delfland, later of Strijen. Johan was steward of Holland around 1560. He owned some houses both in Delft and The Hague. He was married to Margaretha, a daughter of Dirck Godschalcks and Dignum Goudt.
Their son François van Bodegom had an illegitimate son Frans with an unknown woman and also three surviving children with his wife. This situation resulted in 1622 in a quarrel over his possessions, but Frans was allowed to keep the land he had received. Frans lived in Spijkenisse and Hekelingen and had a son Jan, who had a son Willem, who had a daughter Ariaantje who married Arie Abrahams Crooswijk. They were living in Klaaswaal, Holland.

A double first cousins marriage in the Warrebie family in Dordrecht

Johannes (Jan) Warrebie (1746-1775) and Hendrina Warrebie (1736-1785) were married on 5 May 1771 in Dordrecht, The Netherlands. Their surname is spelled in different ways. Jan, for example, was baptized in Dordrecht on 23 October 1746 as a younger son of Thomas Warbie and Elisabeth de Raad (1706-1797). Hendrina was baptized in Dordrecht on 14-3-1736 as eldest daughter of Tristom Warbie and Aartie de Raad (1713-1785).

Jan Warrebie and Henderijntje Warrebie were married on 5 May 1771 in Dordrecht
Their fathers were brothers and their mothers were sisters, so Jan and Hendrina had the same 4 grandparents: Thomas Warbie (±1670-1732), Catharina 't Hooft (1675-1746), Denijs de Raad and Hendrikje Troost (1677-±1749). Jan and Hendrina Warrebie had two children: Anthonij (1772-1807) and Aartje (1774-1802). Jan Warrebie was buried on 4 March 1775 in Dordrecht.

Dordrecht
Hendrina Warrebie's remarriage was on 2 July 1780 in Dordrecht. Her new husband was Hendrik Sleper (also: Slijpers). He had been born in Limburg, the southeastern part of the Netherlands. Their daughter Anna was baptized in Dordrecht on 19 November 1780. Hendrik may have died soon afterwards, for Hendrina was a widow again when she was buried on 1 January 1785 in Dordrecht, aged just 28.
Their son Anthonij was married in 1802 in Dordrecht and had two children, too, before he died on 24 September 1807, aged 35, while serving as a sailor on the Dutch fleet.

Anthonij Warrebie was serving as a sailor on the Dutch fleet when he died op 25-8-1807.

Same Name - Adriaen Wouters Visscher

My 17th-century ancestor Wouter Jacopssen Visscher had 2 sons named Adriaen. They were distinguished by the nicknames “de Ouden” (the Old one) and “de Jonge” (the Young one).

Adriaen Wouters “de Ouden” Visscher was probably born between 1625 and 1630 in Raamsdonk, Brabant, The Netherlands. He was known as Ariaen de Ouden”. He is likely a son of Wouter’s second marriage with a woman named Lijsken Ariens.
Ariaen “de Ouden” was married on 25 February 1655 in ‘s-Grevelduin-Capelle, Brabant, to Cornelia (“Neeltjen”) van Tilborgh. Neeltjen was baptized on 22 January 1634 in ‘s-Grevelduin-Capelle with witness Japickgen Jacobs. Her parents are my triple ancestors Adriaen Woutersz (†1678) and his wife Toniske Seeu (±1605-1680). Ariaen and Neletjen had 7 children, all girls: Lijsken, Teuntje, Dingentke, Marie, Anneke and Wouterke (twice). The oldest two girls were named after their grandmothers.
Ariaen likely died between August 1678 and May 1684. Cornelia’s death was recorded on 5 September 1704 in Vrijhoeve-Capelle.

Adriaen Wouters “de Jonge” Visscher was baptized on 29 May 1635 in ‘s-Grevelduin-Capelle. He was later known as Adriaen or Arien “de Jonge”. He is a son of his father’s third marriage to Anneken, a daughter of Tielman Jacops and Adriaentken Oerlemans. Anneken was widow of Adriaen Dircks “den Ouden” van Clootwijck and had a daughter Adriaentken van Clootwijck. Anneke’s first husband had a brother with the same name, too, and they both had the same parents, while their grandfathers were both named Adriaen.
Arien “de Jonge” was married on 26 December 1667 in ‘s-Grevelduin-Capelle to Anneke Adriaense van Tilborgh, an elder sister of Neeltjen. Anneke was baptized on 11 January 1632 in ‘s-Grevelduin-Capelle with the same witness as Neeltjen. Anneken was already 35 year old at the time of her marriage, and she had no known children. After Arien’s death, recorded on 23 September 1681 in ‘s-Grevelduin-Capelle, Anneken took a second husband, Jost Smits, in 1684. Anneke’s death is recorded in Vrijhoeve-Capelle on 7 April 1699.
