Johanna had several siblings, but only Jacoba Maria Elselina (1850-1905) and Cornelis seem to have survived infancy. Cornelis, the youngest, was born in Gouda on 14 August 1856. Their mother Maria Elselina died in Gouda on 11 January 1862, just before Johanna's 11th birthday, while Cornelis was 5 years old.

Dirk and Margaretha Cornelia had some additional children, but they all died young. Dirk Schenk died in Gouda on 3 February 1872, when his Johanna was 19 years old.

Unmarried Jacoba Maria Elselina Schenk brought 3 babies to their grave in Gouda the period 1875-1881. Her younger brother Cornelis married Catharina Dingena van Vliet (1860-1931) on 18 August 1880 in Gouda, and fathered children with his wife.
Their younger sister Johanna Schenk moved to Amsterdam where she gave birth to a son Leonardus on 16 October 1876. The baby likely died young. Another son, Jacobus Leonardus, was born in Amsterdam on 2 January 1878 around 13:00. Early 1884, Johanna was nursed for 93 days in the Binnengasthuis hospital in Amsterdam. On 18 June of that year, around 18:00, in Amsterdam Johanna Schenk gave birth to a daughter Johanna Helena.
Johanna Schenk married Leonardus Smal on 4 August 1886 in her hometown Gouda. The couple also acknowledged that Johanna Helena is their daughter. Thus, the girl's surname was changed from Schenk to Smal. Johanna's son Jacobus Leonardus Schenk had moved with her to Rotterdam, too.
Leonardus Smal was born on 10 July 1845. In the 1850s he had lived in an orphanage in Amersfoort. In 1882 in Amsterdam, Leonardus suffered severe burns to his back, arm and head when a kerosene lamp fell over.

Longevity ~ Arie Bras (1865-1959) of Almkerk in the USA

Arie Bras was born on 11 July 1865 in Almkerk, Brabant, The Netherlands. His parents are Arie Bras (1822-1901) and Wilhelmina Kamerman (1826-1892). His grandfather Leendert Bras (1793-1862) was a labourer, miller and innkeeper in Almkerk. Leendert's wife, Sijke van Drunen (1797-1874), is a direct-line descendant of my ancestor Michiel Hendrikse van Drunen, who lived around 1700 in Giessen in Brabant.
Arie Bras had many siblings, but several of them died young. Arie's elder brother Teunis Bras died on 11 February 1884, aged 24. Their siblings Sijke, Willemina and Leendert reached adulthood, too.

On 9 May 1890 in Almkerk, Arie Bras married Helena van der Heijden. She was born in Dussen in Brabant on 23 October 1868 as a younger daughter of Jan van der Heijden and his wife Cornelia Verhoeven. Arie's daughter Cornelia Bras was born on 9 February 1891 in Almkerk. She may have died young.
Arie Bras and Helena van der Heijden had further children in the USA: Cornelia Wilhelmina (1892-1873), Tunis (1895-1989), Wilhelmena Gertrude (1896-1980), Harry (1900-1974), John (1901-1993) and Helena (1908-1994). Arie's eldest son was born in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois, on 25 January 1895, and he seems to have named him Tunis after his elder brother who had died at the age of 24.

Arie's wife, Helena, died at the age of 75 on 28 March 1944 in Ganeer Township, Kankakee County, Illinois. Her widower Arie Bras died there on 19 June 1959 at the age of 93. He had survived his wife by 15 years. Arie was buried at the Kankakee Memorial Gardens. Arie's son Tunis Bras was born on 25 January 1895 in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois. He was 94 years old when he died on 28 July 1989 in Sibley, Osceola County, Iowa.

Longevity ~ Engel van Zee (92)

Engel van Zee was born on the 17th and baptised on 18 June 1775 in Herwijnen, Gelderland, The Netherlands. He was a younger son of Gerrit (“Geurt”) van Zee (1728-1789) and his wife Jenneke de Fokkert. Most of Engel's ancestors were settled in Herwijnen. The family did not belong to the nobility or aristocracy, but did use a family coat of arms consisting of a double eagle with a background of gold.
On 17 February 1799 in Herwijnen Engel married Engeltje Bijl. She was born on the 17th and baptised on 20 July 1777 in Herwijnen. Her parents are Coenraad Bijl (1756-1830) and Judith de Bruijn (1748-1820).
Engel and Engeltje had 9 surviving children, when Engeltje died on 15 July 1827 in Herwijnen, aged 49.

Which Engel van Zee is depicted here?

In 1847 the schip "Pieter Floris" departed for Baltimore. On board were Engel's son Coenraad van Zee (1813-1891) and his daughter Judith van Zee (1820-1909) with their spouses and children. Engel's son Govert left for Pella in 1853, but he became ill, and was allegedly left on an island to die.
Coenraad van Zee had a son Engel (“Engle”) van Zee, born on 9 October 1841 in Herwijnen, who died on 26 November 1902 in Iowa, aged 61. He, too, could be the Engel van Zee on the picture above.
The elder Engel van Zee died in Herwijnen on 9 June 1868 around 06:00 A.M. If he had lived 8 days longer, he could have celebrated his 93rd birthday.

Engel van Zee died on 9 June 1886 at the age of nearly 93

Longevity ~ Grietje Reedijk (92) in Strijen, Holland

Grietje Reedijk was born on 25 April 1838 in Strijen, Holland. Her parents are Leendert Reedijk (1810-1879) and Neeltje Strooberg (1805-1859). Grietje was named after her maternal grandmother Grietje Reedijk (±1774-1858) who had married her cousin Willem Reedijk (1773-1864). This couple's common grandparents were Teunis Reedijk (1714-1776) and Grietje van Loon (1710-1783).

Apart from a stillborn son in 1835, Grietje's parents had 4 more children: Martijnis (1836-1922), Willem (1839-1924), Willemijntje (1840-1900) and Annigje (1845-1915). Their mother Neeltje Strooberg died in Strijen on 19 September 1859, aged 54. Grietje was 21 at the time.
On 10 April 1863 in Strijen, Grietje's father Leendert Reedijk was married to his second wife Adriaantje de Bruin (1807-1873), widow of Gerrit de Man. Leendert was to marry two more times before he died in Strijen on 2 September 1879, aged 69.

Grietje Reedijk was the first of her siblings to marry. At the age of 26, she married 30-year-old Jan van der Linden on 29 April 1864 in Strijen. Jan was born on 17 September 1833 in Westmaas as a younger son of Hendrik van der Linden (1795-1858) and Bastiaantje Kleijnendorst (1793-1840).
Grietje and Jan had a daughter Bastiaantje, born on 25 September 1865 in Strijen. She was Grietje's only child. Bastiaantje was married on 12 April 1888 in Strijen to fellow townsman Jan Zevenbergen (1856-1941). They had several children, including Jan Zevenbergen (1890-1951) jr. and Grietje Adriaantje Zevenbergen (1894-1944).

Longevity ~ Gerrit Jilisse Vervoorn (96)

Gerrit Vervoorn was born on 20 April 1770, and baptised in Brakel, Gelderland, The Netherlands, on the 22th with witness Jenneke Vervoorn, the baby's aunt. Gerrit was the 11th child of Adriaantje van Tongerlo and 46-year-old Jillis Vervoorn. Jillis is a grandson of my ancestor Gillis Geraerts Grandia.
At the time of Gerrit's birth, his eldest sister Maaike Vervoorn (1748-1827) was aged 21. Siblings closer in age to Gerrit were Cornelis, born on 10 October 1762, Antonia, baptised on 6 January 1765 in Brakel, and their youngest sister Huijbertje, born on 9 August 1773. They all married in the period 1786-1799. Cornelis Jillisse Vervoorn married Geertruij van Willigen (1762-1835) on 11 June 1786 in Brakel, and they had 10 children, including a son Ruth.

Gerrit Vervoorn and Helena van Wijk were married on 16 October 1794 in Zuilichem

At the age of 24, Gerrit Vervoorn married Helena van Wijk on 6 October 1794 in Zuilichem.

There is some confusion about the parents and date of birth of Gerrit’s wife:
  • Helena’s death record mentions Helena’s age as 56, and her parents as Hendrik van Wijk and Elisabeth Blanken. That couple had a daughter Helena baptised in Brakel on 18 February 1770 with witness Maaike Blanken. When Helena’s eldest daughter Elisabeth was baptised in Brakel on 17 July 1796, the witness was Antonia Blanken.
  • The date of birth of Helena van Wijk on family cards - with her husband Gerrit Vervoorn - is 25 July 1771 in Brakel. On 28 July 1771 in Brakel Hendrik van Wijk and Elisabeth van Dalen had a daughter Helena baptised with witness Jasperijntje Versteeg
So, either the family cards are wrong, or Elisabeth van Dalen and Elisabeth Blanken are two names for one and the same person, and she had two daughters named Helena. Elisabeth Blanken and Hendrik van Wijk were married in Brakel on 27 December 1769. They had a son Hendrik baptised there on 13 February 1774 with witness Maaike Blanken.
Jenneke Blanken was a witness in Brakel on 11 December 1757, when Jasperijntje Versteeg and her husband had a son baptised, so there seems to be a relation between Jasperijntje and the Blanken family.
Since I couldn't find any wedding registration for an Elisabeth van Dalen, I assume she is the same person as Elisabeth Blanken, so Gerrit's wife Helena was likely born on 25 July 1771.

In 1870 Jan Kits Nieuwenkamp drowned off the Irish coast

On her twelfth Atlantic crossing, the British cargo-passenger steamship “Cambria” departed New York on October 8, 1870, under the command of Captain John Carnighan, carrying a general cargo, a crew of 74, and 105 passengers. Two of those passengers were 59-year-old widower Jan Kits Nieuwenkamp, and his 23-year-old daughter Lobetta Johanna.

Algemeen Handelsblad, 13-11-1870

On October 19, around 11:00 pm, the steamship “Cambria” was sailing in heavy seas when it struck Tor Beg Rock, half a mile north-west of Inishtrahull Island. The vessel immediately commenced to fill with water, thus it became at once evident that a large hole bad been made in the ship. Lifeboats were launched, but the only survivor was a passenger named John M'Gartland. Four lifeboats were found empty at the Giant's Causeway, while the stern of the ship drifted ashore at Islay, Scotland.

Opregte Haarlemsche Courant, 26-10-1870

The drowning of Jan Kits Nieuwenkamp and his daughter wasn't the only disaster that struck his family in the year 1870. On January 21, 1870, in Zutphen, his youngest son Jan junior had died “after a short but intense suffering” at the age of 16. By the end of 1870, only 6 of Jan's 14 children were still alive.

Two Goossens marriages on the same day

Laurent Hubert Goossens (1829-1910) and his wife Sophia Hubertina Goossens (1834-1877) had ten children and seven survived infancy. Their fifth child was Felix August Marie (Félix) Goossens who was born on 8 June 1864 in Venlo. Their sixth child was born there on 20 May 1966 as Maria Florentina Albertina (Maria) Goossens.
Laurent Hubert Goossens is a male-line descendant of Antoon Goossens who died in Venlo on 3 July 1790. His wife Sophia Hubertina is a male-line descendant of Thonis Goossens who lived in Mook. Thus, husband and wife belonged to different families - as far as we known - despite having the same surname.

The couple's eldest son Antoine Emile Hubert Goossens (1860-1926) was director of a light bulb factory, and the first to marry in 1892. On 22 May 1894, in Venlo the siblings Félix and Maria were both married. Maria married Emile Jean Hubert Wolters (1864-1926), and had 6 children. Félix married Emma Elise Alexandrine Hubertine (Emma) Goossens. She was born on 13 February 1872 in Venlo as daughter of August Theodoor Hubert Goossens (1828-1911) and his Belgian wife Marie Louise Eugenie Hubertine Lumaije (1848-1907). Emma belongs to the Goossens family descending from Antoon Goossens. She and Félix have a common grandfather Mathieu Ferdinand Goossens (1791-1869).
