Favorite Name ~ Naaktgeboren

Amy Johnson Crow 's Theme for Week 26 is “Favorite Name”. I've chosen the surname Naaktgeboren. I don't have any ancestors with that surname, but it's a typical name in the Hoeksche Waard, an island in Holland, south of Rotterdam and west of Dordrecht. I grew up in the Hoeksche Waard, and my ancestors with the surname Bos all lived on the island.

The Dutch word "naakt" is “naked” in English, while the word "geboren" translates as “born”, so the surname can be translated in English as “born naked”.
Naaktgeboren – together with the surname Poepjes (“poopies”) – is often seen as "a textbook example" of the so-called compulsory name adoption in the Napoleontic Era, which is also known as "the name myth of Napoleon". According to persistent nonsense, people wanted to make fun of Napoleon's policy by adopting an absurd name. That myth is fake, because the surname Naaktgeboren has been in use since the 17th century.

The divorce of Teunis Jabaay and Pauline Spielmann

Businessman Teunis Jabaay was born on 3 May 1891 in Maasdam, Holland. He is a younger son of Maaike Hoogvliet (1851-1937) and Adrianus Jabaaij (1843-1939). Teunis' paternal grandparents were Lijntje Streefkerk (1814-1881) and Leendert Jabaaij (1812-1895). Teunis had an elder brother Willem Jabaaij (1881-1948), who remained single, and some sisters. Teunis seems to have been the only one in the family who wrote his surname as Jabaay.

Haagsche Courant, 22-9-1933

In 1933 Teunis lived in Rijswijk, Holland, located between The Hague and Delft. By then he had met Pauline Spielmann who lived in Essen in Germany at the Gänsemarkt square. They were married in Essen on 17 October 1933. Teunis was 42 years old. Pauline was 4 years his senior.
Pauline was born on 8 February 1887 in “Neu Satum”, which may have been located in the east of Germany in present-day western Poland. Pauline had been married before to someone with the surname Behrens.

Birth and marriage dates of the couple Teunis Jabaaij en Pauline Spielmann

The marriage of Teunis Jabaay and Pauline Spielmann ended in divorce. The district court in Rotterdam granted their divorce on 13 May 1946, a year after the end of World War II. At that time both Teunis and Pauline were living in Rotterdam, Holland.

Nederlandsche Staatscourant, 11-6-1946

Teunis Jabaay died, at the age of 62, on 25 September 1953 in Rotterdam.

Short-lived Marriage ~ Jacob Monster & Neeltje Bomgaars

The Dutch Monster surname can be either a topographic surname, derived from a place name in South-Holland, or it might refer to a monstrosity.

Jacob Monster
Description of Jacob Monster

Jacob Monster was born on 26 September 1823 in Sint-Anthoniepolder, Holland, and baptised there on 19 October. His parents are Arie Monster (1790-1846) and Maria Jacobs in't Veld (1798-1835). Jacob and Arie are descendants of my double ancestors Adriaen (“Arie Jacobs”) Monster and his first wife Teuntie Barendregt who were married in Sint-Anthoniepolder on 25 April 1694.
At the age of 12, Jacob lost his mother. On 5 February 1837 in Maasdam, Holland, his father married his young second wife Maaike Barendrecht (1812-1847).

Jacob's elder siblings Pieter Monster (1818-1906) and Neeltje Monster (1821-1885) were both married by 1846. On 21 May 1846 in nearby Westmaas 22-year-old Jacob married Neeltje Bomgaars. She was born on 20 November 1822 in Westmaas as younger daughter of Margaretha (“Grietje”) Huijzer (1785-1824) and Willem Bomgaars (1784-1846). Willem Bomgaars had died just 3 days before Neeltje's Wedding ceremony. Neeltje must have been pregnant, because their son Arij was born within half a year on 10 November 1846 in Westmaas.
At the time of his marriage, Jacob Monster was doing his military service in an infantry regiment, and acquired permission to attend his wedding. Jacob is described as having blond hair and blue eyes.

The marriage of Jacob Monster and his first wife Neeltje Bomgaars lasted for 20 months. Neeltje died in Westmaas on 24 January 1848 at the age of 25. Jacob was a widower at the age of 24.

On 4 May 1855 in Westmaas, at the age of 31, Jacob Monster married his second wife Anna Korpel (1829-1898), daughter of Kornelis Klaasse Korpel (17986-1848) and his first wife Maria Hendriks in't Veld (1798-1835)*. Anna gave birth to 9 additional children, including Cornelis, Maria, Geertrui, Pieter, Cornelia and Willempje.

Jacob's son from his first marriage, Arij Monster, married Cornelia van Setten (1851-1931) on 2 April 1874 in Westmaas. They had several children. Arij Monster died, aged 70, on 22 December 1916 in nearby Klaaswaal.
Jacob lost his second wife Anna Korpel on 28 December 1898 in Westmaas. She was 69 years old. Jacob was 75. He died at the age of 78 in Westmaas on 13 July 1902.

*  Maria Hendriks in't Veld (1798-1835) and Maria Jacobs in't Veld (1798-1835) are both descendants of my ancestors Dirk Aerde in't Veld and his wife Jaapje Huigen Snaijer (1683-1737).

Japhet

In the bible Japhet is one of the 3 sons of Noah in the Book of Genesis. Japhet's brothers were Shem and Ham. In medieval and early modern European tradition Japhet was considered to be the progenitor of the European peoples. The name derives from the Hebrew “Yepheth”, meaning “opened”. In Arabic citations the name is usually given as "Yafeth bin Nuh" (Japheth son of Noah).

Jaefet (“Joffijt”) Andriesz. lived in Oost-IJsselmonde, Holland, in the first half of the 16th century. He is a double ancestor, because I descend from both his daughter Grijet Japhitten and his son Lenert Jaeffette.
Lenert Jaefette, a farmer in Oost-IJssemonde, is the grandfather of Japhet Hendriksz. in 't Veld (±1619-1687) who lived at a farm in the reclaimed Bonaventura polder near 's-Gravendeel, Holland. Japhet is a double ancestor, too, because I descend from both his son Hendrik and his daughter Lijntje who have different mothers.
On 10-8-1692 in 's-Gravendeel Lijntje Jafets in't Veld (1660-1704) married Hendrik Reijnen van der Linden (1660-1724), and named a son Japhet, too.

Japhet Hendriksz. in't Veld was widower of Lijntjen Dirckx Verduijn
when he married Soetjen Ariens in 1659 in Ridderkerk, Holland.

Two persons died at sea, and one person was born at sea. Subsequently, on the trip to Iowa, even more people died.

Surname Line With the Longest Stay in a Locality

On his Genea-Musings Blog, Randy Seaver wrote about a Surname Line With the Longest Stay in a Locality. Many of my ancestors lived for several generations in the city of Dordrecht, on an island named the "Hoeksche Waard", and also in an area known as the "Langstraat" (a small protestant area, surrounded by a much larger catholic area). Most of my ancestors all used to live in Holland, a geographical region and former province on the western coast of the Netherlands, so lines of ancestors in one region is not a challenge for me at all. Therefore I've made a line of ancestors (a) living in one city, Dordrecht, (b) living on one island, the Hoeksche Waard, and (c) living in one village, Strijen.

On my mother's side I've got family that has been living for 9 generations in the city of Dordrecht:

  1. Baerthout Pietersz de Sterke was born in Gouda and moved to Dordrecht; his son is
  2. Matthijs Baerthoudsz de Sterke who was baptised in Dordrecht and lived there; his son is
  3. Baerthout Thijssen de Sterke (1640-1712) who was born in Dordrecht and lived there; his son is
  4. Pieter Baerthoutsz de Sterke (1672-1716) who was born in Dordrecht and moved in 1706 to Rotterdam; his son is
  5. Pieter de Sterke (1705-1769) who was born in Dordrecht and lived there; his son is
  6. David de Sterke (1733-1797) who was born in Dordrecht and lived there; his son is
  7. Pieter de Sterke (1765-1842) who was born in Dordrecht and lived there; his son is
  8. Arie de Sterke (1796-1892) who was born in Dordrecht and lived there; his daughter is
  9. Adriana de Sterke (1828-1917) who was born and lived in Dordrecht. She is my great-great-grandmother.

My paternal ancestors all lived on an island named the Hoeksche Waard. It's located to the west of the city of Dordrecht, and to the south of the city of Rotterdam. Around 1600 my Bos family was living in Puttershoek in the north of the island. After the reclamation of a new polder at the south of the island, my paternal ancestors moved to the new village of Numansdorp. In the early 19th century my paternal ancestors moved to a dike just south of the tiny village of Cillaarshoek. Finally, my father moved to the nearby village of Strijen near the end of his life.
My paternal ancestral line has 12 generations on one island:

  1. Gijsbert Gerrits Boschman lived around 1600 in Puttershoek in the Hoeksche Waard, an island. He is the father of
  2. Gijsbert Cornelisse Bos who lived in Numansdorp in the early 17th century. He is the father of
  3. Cornelis Gijsberts Bos (1655-1731) who was born in Numansdorp, and lived there. He is the father of
  4. Leendert Cornelisse Bos (1693- ±1725) who was born in Numansdorp, and lived there. He is the father of
  5. Cent Leenderts Bos (1723-1783) who was born in Numansdorp, and lived there. He is the father of
  6. Leendert Cente Bos (1755-1830) who was born in Numansdorp, and moved to Cillaarshoek, both in the Hoeksche Waard. He is the father of
  7. Cent Leenderts Bos (±1788-1869) who was born in Numansdorp, and lived in Cillaarshoek, both in the Hoeksche Waard. He is the father of
  8. Cornelis Bos (1813-1888) who was born in Cillaarshoek and lived there. He is the father of
  9. Teunis Bos (1853-1923) who was born in Cillaarshoek and lived there. He is the father of
  10. Hendrik Bos (1901-1985) who was born in Cillaarshoek and lived there. He is the father of
  11. Teunis Pieter Bos (1929-2021) who was born in Cillaarshoek and lived there, and - at the end of his life - in nearby Strijen, both in the Hoeksche Waard. He is the father of
  12. me; I grew up in Cillaarshoek in the Hoeksche Waard, an island.

Kornelia Baars was born on 20 April 1809 in Oud-Beijerland in Holland. Her parents are Arij Baars (1764-1846) and his second wife Adriana Kraak (±1783-1816). Arij's had been a widower of Neeltje Kraak (1766-±1805), Adriana's cousin. Arij Baars had 15 children with his 2 wives.

On 7 April 1831 in Oud-Beijerland 21-year-old Kornelia Baars was married. The groom was Albertus Pieter Camphuis, born on 21 January 1808 in Charlois (now part of Rotterdam). His parents are Feiko Albertus Camphuis, who originated in Appingedam near Groningen, and his wife Neeltje Moudt.
Kornelia Baars gave birth to her first child, Adriana Neeltje Camphuis, on 6 October 1831 in Oud-Beijerland. In the next two years Feike Albertus and Neeltje Kornelia were born, but the last died on 13 December 1834, 3 months old.
On 25 July 1835 disaster struck again, when Albertus Pieter Camphuis died, at the age of 27, after a short-term illness. Kornela was pregnant at the time. She gave birth on 19 October to a son named after his father. Little Albertus Pieter died on 29 December, 2 months old. Kornelia Baars was a 26-year-old widow with 2 small children. She had been married for only 4 years.

Daniel had married his first wife, Anna Boulonois, on 6 June 1821 in Rotterdam, when he was 25 years old. Anna was born on 27-7-1791 in Rotterdam, and died there on 17 July 1829.
Daniel married his second wife, Ingetje de Regt, on 22-12-1830 in Rotterdam. Together they had a son Pieter, a daughter Catharina, and a stillbirth. Ingetje died on 1 September 1836, aged 35 years and 11 months.

Cornelia Baars and Daniel Stolk had 5 children in the period 1838-1848, but they all died young. Cornelia's son Feike Albertus Kamphuis died in 1839, aged 5. In the summer of 1848 her only surviving child was her eldest daughter Adriana Neeltje Camphuis.
On 2 April 1858 Adriana Neeltje Camphuis was married to Lucas Vreugdenhil, a widower with children who was 10 years her senior. In 1860 they were living in de Haarlemmermeer area.
