Longevity ~ Samson Joseph Vos (109) in Amsterdam

Samson Joseph Vos died in Amsterdam on 2 January 1836, supposedly in the old age of 109. In 1829, he had been taken in at the a retirement home on Roeterseiland, enclosed by canals, in Amsterdam.

Samson Joseph was born in northern Hesse in Germany. As a child he moved to Amsterdam with his parents.
For most of his life Samson Joseph had been trading in scrap iron. He had married Rachel, daughter of Abraham Pisota. She had died at the age of 64 in 1797 in Amsterdam. The couple had 7 sons and 3 daughters, and several grand- and great-grandchildren.

Longevity ~ Maria Jabaaij (91)

Maria Jabaaij was baptized on February 21, 1779, in Strijen, Holland. She was born on the 19th. Her parents are Hendrik Jabaaij (1738-1806) and Lijsbeth (“Lijsje”) Kraak. Maria was the youngest of their 4 surviving children. Her elder siblings were Leendert (1768-1840), Lena (1772-1813) and Cornelis (1775-1841) Jabaaij.
Maria's paternal grandparents are Leendert Jabaaij and Lena Monster (1701-1761) who is a granddaughter of my ancestor Hendrijck Jansen Monster (±1610-±1658).

On May 26, 1805, in Klaaswaal, Holland, Maria (26) was married to Teunis Vos (33). Teunis was baptised in Klaaswaal on September 15, 1771. His parents are Hendrik Vos (±1745-1832) and Pietertje van Baaren.
Maria and Teunis had 3 children:

1. Hendrik was born on January 27, 1809, and baptized on the 29th in Klaaswaal. He first married Maria Bakker in 1839. He secondly married Adriana Werkhoven in 1877. Hendrik had issue. He died on February 1, 1879, in Klaaswaal.
2. Adrianus was born on the 13th, and baptized on September 15, 1811, in Klaaswaal. He died there on September 29, 1859, aged 48.
   
3. Elisabeth was born on October 10, 1814, in Klaaswaal. She was married there in 1839 to Adrianus Herweijer (1810-1881). Elisabeth, aged 25, died - 15 days after giving birth - on May 19, 1840, in Klaaswaal. The baby, her only child, had died on the 8th.

Teunis Vos died in Klaaswaal on July 18, 1843, aged 72. Maria Jabaaij survived her husband for 27 years, dying in Klaaswaal on November 24, 1870, aged 91.

Maria's brother Leendert had a son Dingeman Jabaaij (1796-1872) who emigrated to the U.S.A. with his wife and children. He is buried in Cook County, Illinois.

Sisters Pieternella and Peterke van Gammeren

The sisters Pieternella and Peterke van Gammeren were living in the 19th century in an area in Brabant, The Netherlands, with the villages Eethen, Genderen and Heesbeen. Their parents are Cornelis van Gammeren (1769-1845) and his wife Johanna Vos (1791-1869) who were married on 9 December 1814. Johanna is a daughter of Peter Vos and Petronella van Steenhoven.
The couple's eldest daughter was named Catharina after her paternal grandmother. On 5 March 1821 a daughter was born that was named Pieternella after her maternal grandmother. The next daughter was born on 6 July 1823, and named Peterke after her maternal grandfather. However, names like Pieternella, Petronella, Peterke, Pietertje, Pietje and Petra are basically different forms of the same name, a female version of the biblical male name Peter.

The first sibling to get married was Catharina van Gammeren (1819-1888) who was married on 27 May 1841. The groom was Gerrit Branderhorst, son of Dirk Branderhorst (1786-1864) and Aletta Antonetta Verdoorn (1786-1885), and a male-line descendant of my ancestor Gerrit Branderhorst (1680-±1749).
Catharina and Gerrit were to have several children, including Cornelis, Johanna, Aletta Antonetta and  Arie Lambert.

Pieternella van Gammeren, the second sibling, was married on 31 March 1843 to Jan Dirk van den Heuvel. He was born on 19 March 1817 in Genderen. His parents are Aletta Branderhorst (1793-1848) and her first husband Cornelis van de Heuvel. Aletta is also a descendant of my ancestor Gerrit Branderhorst.
Pieternella and Jan Dirk were to have 11 children, including Aletta Johanna, Johanna Cornelia, Cornelis, Cornelia Pieternella, Pietertje, Labina, Labinus and Jansje van den Heuvel (1859-1945).

Peterke van Gammeren, the third sibling, was married on 14 February 1845 to Hermen van der Beek. He was born in Waalwijk on 23 December 1816 as son on merchant Cornelis van der Beek and his wife Antonia Branderhorst (1790-1818). Hermen van der Beek died on 1 March 1855, aged 38. His widow was 31 years old, and childless.
Peterke was remarried on 27 March 1856 to 29-year-old Gerrit Branderhorst. He was born on 26 October 1826 as son of Johannis Branderhorst (1789-1865) and Hester Millenaar. Peterke's second father-in-law was a brother of her first mother-in-law. Those siblings Johannis and Antonia Branderhorst are also descendants of my ancestor Gerrit Branderhorst.
Peterke and Gerrit are the parents of Johanna Hester, Johannis Cornelis, Cornelis Johannis, Hester Margaretha, Willem Marius and Petertje Gerritje Branderhorst.

Cornelis Oerlemans (1755-1779) perished in Asia ~ Mariner Monday

On January 6, 1779, 24-year-old Cornelis Oerlemans boarded the ship “Zeeploeg” as accountant for the administration of goods, wages and food for the Dutch East India Company (V.O.C.). The ship had been build in 1777 at the company’s yard in Amsterdam. Its skipper was Jan Stil. A long-distance voyage was hard on the health of a sailing ship’s crew. During the first 2-3 months of the voyage newcomers aboard usually developed scurvy due to a lack of vitamin C.
After a voyage of 3½ months at sea, the ship and crew arrived at the Cape of Good Hoop in South-Africa on April 24, 1779. They resumed their voyage at May 6, arriving at Batavia (nowadays Jakarta) in Indonesia on June 30, 1779.
Cornelis Oerlemans remained in Asia where he died within 6 months on December 21, 1779. Four days earlier the ship “Zeeploeg” had been wrecked and the whole crew drowned.

Cornelis Oerlemans was baptized on April 20, 1755, in Sprang, Brabant, The Netherlands, as the eldest child of Govert Oerlemans (1719-1791) and his first wife, IJda de Grandt (1730-1778). Cornelis had 2 younger sisters, Clasina Elizabeth Oerlemans (1759-1817) and Bernardina Cornelia Oerlemans (1762-1833). His father, Govert Oerlemans, was remarried in 1786 in Sprang to Engelina Vos. As a widow she was remarried in 1792 to Johannes Josephus de Wilde and had a daughter Helena Elisabeth de Wilde (1797-1867).

On November 24, 1795, Cornelis’ salary was finally paid to his heirs: his stepmother and his two sisters.

Klaas IJsbrandsz Vermeulen Lived Long

The 52 Ancestors Week 16 Theme being “Live Long” I was curious what the age of my eldest ancestor would be. Thus, I had Aldfaer (my genealogy program) generate a list with old ancestors and looked for the eldest ancestor with dates that I'm sure are right. For several ancestor's the birth data was a proximity, so I couldn't use them. By elimination I did find an ancestor who really did reach the age of 90!

Klaas IJsbrandsz Vermeulen is the ancestor who reached the age of 90. He was baptized on May 11, 1741, in Lexmond, The Netherlands, so he must have been born at most a couple of weeks before that date. His parents were IJsbrant Janse Vermeulen and Cornelia van den Bergh, who were married in 1730 in Lexmond.

Klaas was married on January 6, 1765, in Lexmond to Maria de Bruijn. She was baptized on May 24, 1744, in Ameide. Her parents were Lambert de Bruijn and Johanna (de) Vos (who is another (de) Vos brick wall). Klaas and Maria had 7 children baptized in Lexmond in the period 1765-1777: IJsbrand, Johanna, Willemijntje (twice), Lambert, Lamberta and Huibertje. Their daughter Lamberta is my ancestor through her marriage to Willem Houweling (1773-1858). 

Klaas IJsbrandz Vermeulen died on December 17, 1831, in Lexmond, at the age of 90.

Jacobus Vos and Johanna de Roy, a double brick wall

One of my ancestors, Pieternella Vos, was baptized on December 20, 1778, in Capelle, Brabant, The Netherlands. She was the only known daughter of Jacobus Vos and Johanna de Roy. This couple had married earlier that year on May 17, 1778, in Capelle. Jacobus Vos was a young man, born in Capelle. Johanna de Roy was a young girl, born in Loon op Zand, Brabant, The Netherlands.

Pieternella Vos was married on February 9, 1800, in Capelle to Pieter Branderhorst (1777-1852). They paid ƒ12,- for their marriage, so they certainly weren’t poor folks. The marriage produced 9 children: Cornelis, Johanna (2x), Maria, Jacoba (2x), Willem, Jacobus and Pieternella. Three of these nine children were married and had children of their own.

Pieternella Vos died on March 18, 1847, in Capelle. Again, her parents are mentioned as being Jacobus Vos and Johanna de Rooij.

These are all references to my ancestors Jacobus Vos and Johanna de Roy/Rooij. Together they are a double brick wall.
