Longevity ~ Pieter de Jong (95)

Pieter de Jong was baptized on April Fools' Day in 1759 in Oud-Alblas in Holland with witness Jannigje de Jong. Pieter is the 10th and youngest child of Tijs de Jong and Jannigje Kooijmans.

Pieter de Jong was married on 3 May 1801 in Oud-Alblas to Neeltje Stichter. She was baptized on 30 October 1774 in Noordeloos. Her parents are Claas Stigter and Pieternella de Kluijt.

Pieter de Jong and Neeltje Stigter had 9 children:

1. Jannigje de Jong was born on 17-2-1802 and baptized on 21-02-1802 in Oud-Alblas with widness Marijgje de Jong. Jannigje married Jan Korporaal in 1827. He died in 1859. Jannigje survived him. Among their children was Marigje Korporaal, born on 16-7-1828 in Oud-Alblas, who reached the age of 93 before she die don 6-5-1922 in Oud-Alblas. 
2. Tijs de Jong was born on 4-9-1803 and baptized on 11-9-1803 in Oud-Alblas with witness Marijgje de Jong. At the age of 51, Tijs married 40-year0old Wouterina Groeneweg. Tijs die don 12-3-1874 in Oud-Alblas, aged 70.
3. Pieternella de Jong was born 26-3-1805 and baptized on 31-3-1805 in Oud-Alblas with witness Ariaantje Kooijwijk, wife of Jan Stichter. At the age of 40, Pieternella married 48-year-old Cornelis Hardam. Pieternella died on 5-8-1876 in Alblasserdam, aged 71. 
4. Klaas de Jong was born on 28-03-1806 and baptized on 30-3-1806 in Oud-Alblas with witness Ariaantje Kooijwijk. Klaas married Dirkje Boer. He died on 5-6-1879 in Alblasserdam, aged 73.
5. Arie de Jong was born on 19-5-1808 and baptized on 19-6-1808 in Oud-Alblas. Arie was married on 18-11-1843 in Nieuw-Lekkerland to Aartje Berkouwer, born on 17-2-1821 in Nieuw-Lekkerland. Arie died on 15-11-1859 in Alblasserdam, aged 51. 



Teunis de Jong
(1816-1876)

6. Willempje de Jong was born on 7-12-1810 and baptized on 16-12-1810 in Oud-Alblas with widness Ariaantje Kooijwijk. In 1835 Willempje married Hendrik de Haan. Willempje died on 23-10-1874 in Alblasserdam, aged 63. 
7. Marthijnus de Jong was born on 17-6-1812 and baptized on 28-06-1812 in Oud-Alblas with widness Marijgje de Jong. Marthijnus married Martijntje van Rijnsbergen in 1840. He died on 12-10-1892 in Oud-Alblas at the age of 80. 
8. Jan de Jong was born on 23-1-1815 in Oud-Alblas and baptized on 5-3-1815 in Oud-Olblas. Jan died there on 14-3-1845, aged 30. 
9. Teunis de Jong was born on 5-6-1816 in Oud-Alblas. He married 3 times, had issue, and emigrated to the USA. His third wife was Lijntje Boer (1812-1891).

Pieter's elder brother Adriaan de Jong (1736-1823) reached the age of 88. Pieter's wife, Neeltje Stigter, died on 7-2-1829 in Oud-Alblas, aged 54. Pieter de Jong survived his wife for 25 years and reached the age of 95. He died on 26 June 1854 in Oud-Alblas.

Uiltje de Jong (1867-1950)

In some parts of The Netherlands some strange names were given to children. The main character of this story, for example, is Uiltje de Jong. His given name can be translated as “little owl”. He was born on 5 May 1867. His parents, Jan de Jong and Elizabeth Jansma (1835-) were living in Oudehorne, east of Heerenveen in Frisia. His grandparents are Jan de Jong, Annigjen Visser, Jan Jansma and Janke Westerterp. Janke’s father was named Uiltje, too. On 29 June 1888 in Schoterland Janke Westerterp died at the age of 90.

At the age of 39, Uiltje de Jong was married to 26-year-old Doetje Zuidersma on 24 May 1906 in Schoterland in Frisia. She was born on 4 October 1879 in Aengwirden, north of Heerenveen. Her parents are Meint Zuidersma and Antje de Jong. Amongst Doetje’s many siblings were clergyman Klaas Zuidersma (1875-1955) and carpenter Gijsbert Zuidersma (1882-1933).

Uiltje and Doetje had the following children:

1. Elisabeth was born on 7 May 1908 in Schoterland;
2. Meint was born on 1 August 1909 in Schoterland;
3. Jan.

At the age of 39, Doetje Zuidersma died in July 1919 in Duurswoude, southeast of Drachten in Frisia. Her widower, Uiltje de Jong, emigrated to Canada with his sons. His daughter Eliabeth had married Hugo Koomans and was living in Hoogeveen in Drenthe in The Netherlands, and had at least two sons.
Uiltje de Jong died, aged 87, on March 12, 1954, in Sterling, Ontario, Canada, and was buried there on the 15th.

Longevity ~ Sina Kamerling (98)

Sina Kamerling was born in the autumn of 1903 in Oude-Tonge on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee in Holland. She was a younger daughter of Aren Kamerling (1861-1923) and his wife Klazina Adriana van der Tulp (1867-1959).

In 1921 Sina's elder brother Nicolaas Kamerling (1894-1971) married Cornelia Markus (1899-1976). She was one of the many children of Job Markus (1865-1937) and his wife Cornelia van der Made (1867-1942). It was one of Cornelia's younger siblings, Cornelis (“Cor”) Markus, who came to the attention of Sina Kamerling. Sina (23) and Cor (22) were married on October 22, 1926 in Nieuwe Tonge.

Before World War II, Sina Kamerling gave birth to Cornelia, Aren, Klaas Adriaan, Dirkje and a stillborn child. After the war an additional child was born: Adrianus, known as “Adrie”. He was to marry Annelies Swanette Käte Schulz, and lived in Germany.
Sina's son Klaas Adriaan Markus, born in the summer of 1931 in Melissant, moved to Terrace, Canada. He married and had 2 children named Chantal and Adriaan. 
Sina's daughter Dirkje Markus, born in the autumn of 1936 in Nieuwe Tonge, married widower Jacob van Erkel. He had lost his wife, Lijntje Adriana van Putten, and a daughter, Willemina Maria van Erkel, during the flood of 1953. After his death at the age of 65 on October 22, 1982, in Nieuwe Tonge, Dirkje married P. de Jong. 
Sina's brother-in-law, Johannis (“Joe”) Markus, born on April 30, 1901, in nearby Dirksland, travelled the the U.S.A. in January 1921. At first he lived and worked at the farm of the Buth family. Later he worked for a diary factory in in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He married Helen Gaca. In 1955 and 1969 the couple visited The Netherlands.

Sina's mother, Klazina Adriana van der Tulp, died on June 10, 1959, in Nieuwe Tonge, aged 92. Sina's husband, Cor Markus, died on April 21, 1983 in Sommelsdijk, at the age of 79. He was buried there on the 26th. Sina's youngest son Adrianus Markus was in bad health for years beftore he died on November 21, 2001. The next year, on April 8, Sina died in Sommelsdijk at the age of 98 years and 7 months old. The last years of her life Sina had been living in a nursing home. She was buried in Sommelsdijk on the 12th.

Jan de Jong married Maartje Bosman in 1744 in Rotterdam

Jan de Jong was baptized in Rotterdam, Holland, on 18 December 1718 with witness Jannetje Jans. His parents are van Nicolaas (Claas) Dirckse de Jong (†1754) and Abigael (Abiegeltie) Jans de Weijne (±1680-1762), and they were living in the Leeuwestraet in Rotterdam since their marriage in May 1700. Jan had elder surviving siblings Neeltie and Dirk de Jong.

Jan was married to Maartje (Maartie) Bosman on 14 October 1744 the English-presbyterian church of Rotterdam. They had first given notice of their marriage on 27 September. Maartje was baptized on 19 March 1716 in Rotterdam. Her parents are Jan “den Jongen” Bosman and his wife Cornelia Gobelius (†1747) who were married in Rotterdam on 7 May 1715. Maartje Bosman was a witness at the baptisms of her nephew Jan Bosman on 8 July 1747 and her grandchildren Maartje de Jong on 12 January 1773, Jan de Bruijn on 8 August 1775, and Cornelia de Bruijn on 16 November 1783.

Jan de Jong and Maartje Bosman were living at the Nieuwehave Street in Rotterdam. Jan is buried on 5 September 1781 in Rotterdam, aged 62. He was survived by 3 children. As a widow Maartje Bosman was living at the Botersloot Street. She was buried on 15 February 1788 in Rotterdam.

Same Name - Adriaan de Jong

The #52Ancestors topic for this week is "Same Name". That's a topic I can relate to! 

My father's surname, Bos (which translates in English as "Bush" or "Wood"), is the 14th most common surname in The Netherlands with 0.22%. Luckily, my father's family features a recurring first name that is quite unusual: "Cent". In addition, my Bos ancestors lived on an island known as "Hoeksche Waard". Through the centuries, they moved from Puttershoek via Numansdorp to Cillaarshoek, but those are all places on the same isle.

My mother's surname, De Jong (which translates in English as "The Young"), is the number 1 surname in The Netherlands with 0.53%. My "De Jong" ancestors lived in Capelle and Loon op Zand, two villages in a protestant area in a mainly catholic Dutch region known as Brabant. Another non-related "De Jong" family lived in the same area, but they were richer, and can thus be distinguished from my mother's poor ancestors. 
Most men among my mother's ancestors had the first name "Adriaan". The first Adriaen de Jong was likely born around 1555, his son, another Adriaan, was likely born around 1580, and his son was Peter de Jonge (1626-1700) who had a son Jan de Jongh (1663-1742). Jan had a younger son Adriaan ("Arie") de Jong (1710-1761) with an eldest son Adriaan de Jong (±1737-1795) with a son Adriaan de Jong (1776-1844) with a son Adriaan de Jong (1804-1857) who also had a son Adriaan de Jong (1850-1899), who is my great-grandfather.

The Kots Family in Maurice

Farmer Gerrit Jan Kots (31) and maid Hendrika Hane (21) were married on May 28, 1858, in Aalten, The Netherlands. Gerrit Jan Kots was a son of Engelbarts Kots and Dora Geerdes. Hendrika Hane was a daughter of Joannes Christiaan Hane and Janna Willemina Gerritsen.

They took up residence in Barlo near Aalten. There, Hendrika Hane gave birth to their children: 

• Jan Berend, born on September 13, 1859, 
• Dora Willemina, born on September 28, 1861,
• Hendrik Jan, born on February 15, 1866, 
• Engelina Berendina, born on February 7, 1869,
• Tonia, born on February 17, 1871,
• Willemina, born on March 31, 1874,
• Johannes, born on July 25, 1878, died on April 19, 1879,
• Johanna, born on April 9, 1880. 

The family moved to Maurice, Iowa. Newspaper "De Volksvriend" mentioned their daughter Tonia Kots on December 7, 1893, as being ill. "De Volksvriend" mentioned G.J. Kots on March 30, 1893, when he travelled to Pella to be treated for cancer. He died on April 4, 1896.

Jacobus Vos and Johanna de Roy, a double brick wall

One of my ancestors, Pieternella Vos, was baptized on December 20, 1778, in Capelle, Brabant, The Netherlands. She was the only known daughter of Jacobus Vos and Johanna de Roy. This couple had married earlier that year on May 17, 1778, in Capelle. Jacobus Vos was a young man, born in Capelle. Johanna de Roy was a young girl, born in Loon op Zand, Brabant, The Netherlands.

Pieternella Vos was married on February 9, 1800, in Capelle to Pieter Branderhorst (1777-1852). They paid ƒ12,- for their marriage, so they certainly weren’t poor folks. The marriage produced 9 children: Cornelis, Johanna (2x), Maria, Jacoba (2x), Willem, Jacobus and Pieternella. Three of these nine children were married and had children of their own.

Pieternella Vos died on March 18, 1847, in Capelle. Again, her parents are mentioned as being Jacobus Vos and Johanna de Rooij.

These are all references to my ancestors Jacobus Vos and Johanna de Roy/Rooij. Together they are a double brick wall.

This certificate shows that my grandmother Willempje Cornelia Zijderveld, born on November 6, 1892, became a member of the Dutch Reformed Church on March 5, 1918, in Dordrecht, The Netherlands:

On March 29, 1917, my grandmother had married my grandfather Pieter de Jong (1892-1973). They had 10 children and a miscarriage from 10 pregnancies. At first they lived in Sprang-Capelle, Noord-Brabant, later they moved to Mookhoek, Zuid-Holland. My grandmother died on July 16, 1976, in Oud-Beijerland.

My grandfather was born in Sprang-Capelle and at the age of 7 he lost his father, leaving the widow and children in very poor circumstances. My grandmother was born in Dordrecht as an only daughter with several brothers and was a bit spoiled.

Pieter de Jong

My grandfather, Pieter de Jong (1892-1973) married my grandmother Willempje Cornelia Zijderveld (1892-1976) on March 29, 1917 in Dordrecht, South Holland, The Netherlands. They had 10 children and a miscarriage from 10 pregnancies in the period 1917-1935.
The 1930s were a time of unemployment and poverty, so my grandparents moved around 1930 from Capelle, North-Brabant, to Mookhoek, South-Holland, in search of employment. There, my grandfather started working as a hind on a farm and acquired a certificate for properly milking cows. After the war my grandfather found employment in building construction.

Recently I received a little "treasure chest" from my uncle Cees de Jong. Among many other papers pertaining my grandparents, it contained my maternal grandmother's wartime identity card:

This ID-card ("persoonsbewijs" in Dutch) was introduced in The Netherlands by the Germans during World War II in April 1941.

Surname Saturday - The most common surnames in Europe

In many areas around the world, patronyms predate the use of family names. A patronym, orpatronymic suffix, is a component of a personal name based on the given name of one's father, grandfather or an even earlier male ancestor. In Europe many surnames originate from patronyms.

An example is the nr. 7 surname in England: Johnson (0.37%) that originally meant "son of John". On the Faroe Islands Johannesen ranks nr. 7, too (1.09%). In Norway Johansen ranks nr. 2, but the nr. 1, Hansen, is just a shortened version of the same name. In Sweden Johansson is the nr. 1 name (0.16%).  In The Netherlands Jansen ranks nr. 2 with 0.46%, but when the closely related Dutch surnames Jansen, Janssen and Janse are combined, they rank nr. 1. The top 2 names in Belgium are patronyms, too: Peeters and Janssens, names mostly used in Flanders. 

In Russia the surname Ivanov (Ivan's/John's) ranks 2nd (1.30%). That surname is also popular is Estonia and Bulgaria. Jovanović (son of Jovan/John), ranks 1st in Serbia. The prefix Ó in Ireland means "descendant of", while the prefix Mac/Mc means "son of". Nowadays, Icelandic law still favors the use of patronyms - or more recently, matronyms - over family names.
