2 Sutherland sisters married 2 brothers

Anna Sutherland was born on 15-12-1819 in 's-Gravendeel, Holland, as a younger daughter of tailor Angus Sutherland (±1772-1833) and his wife Adriana Kraak (1784-1833). Anna was named after her maternal grandmother Annetje van Inslagen, wife of Jan Kraak.
Anna had elder surviving brothers George Christiaan (1812-1889), Jan (1814-1886) and Gerardus Sutherland (1818-1902). Her next sibling was a brother Hendrik Sutherland (1821-1893). Their youngest sibling was born on 10-3-1828 in 's-Gravendeel and named Dingena.

On 28-4-1849 in 's-Gravendeel Anna Sutherland (29) was married to workman Joost Rijkhoek (25). He was born in 's-Gravendeel on 29-7-1823 as the eldest son of Leendert Rijkhoek (1792-1852) and Susann Sint Nicolaas (1796-1880). Joost was named after his paternal grandfather, another Joost Rijkhoek (†1798) who was the husband of Annigje Klejnjan (1762-1825). Joost Rijkhoek and Anna Sutherland named their Adriana, Leendert, Susuanna, August, Annigje, George Christiaan, Leonardus and Hendrik.

This couple had 4 children named Adriana, Leendert, August and Joost. Remarkably, both couples had a son named August instead of Angus. Also, both brides were older than their grooms.
Jan Rijkhoek was born  on 17-11-1835 in 's-Gravendeel as one of the youngest siblings of Joost. Jan had a length of just 152 cm.  His eyes were blauw and his eyebrows and hair were brown. His face was oval chaped, his forehead was low, and his chin was round.

Jan van der Linden (1838-1902) of Dubbeldam in Pella

Jan van der Linden was born on 26 April 1811 in Dubbeldam, Holland. His parents are Willem Willems van der Linden (1773-1822) and Maaike Aries Kleinjan (±1775-1822). Jan is a male-line descendant of my ancestor Dirrick Dirricxe van der Linden (±1620- ±1676) of Strijen, Holland. Jan's mother, too, is related to several of my ancestors.
On 5 February 1834 in 's-Gravendeel, Holland, Jan was married to Lijpje Moret. She was born there on 30 May 1813. Her parents are Leendert Moret (±1784-1865) and his first wife Maria Snijders (±1787-1823). In 's-Gravendeel Lijpje gave birth to six children in the period 1835-45, but two of them died young.

Rotterdamsche Courant, 6 April 1847
In Rotterdam in 1847, painter Jan van der Linden (36), his wife Lijpje (34) and their 4 remaining children Leendert (9), Maaike (6), Willem (4) and Marinus (1) boarded the ship "Nagasaki". The schip's captain was F.A. Bunnemeijer. Departure from Rotterdam was on 11 April 1847 with 239 passengers on board. Two persons died at sea, and one person was born at sea.
The ship’s cleanliness was not to Dutch standards. Almost immediately its inhabitants—both men and women—cleaned the ship from top to bottom. Religious services were held daily, consisting mostly of psalm singing. The ship passed the Isle of Wight on April 27. They arrived in Baltimore in the U.S.A. on 10 June 1847.
From Baltimore, the arriving colonists took the train to Columbia, Pennsylvania, where they were herded onto overcrowded canal boats. At Pittsburgh, they were transported down the Ohio River to St. Louis. Although the colony had lost a few members at sea and four on the trip from Baltimore, many more died in the extreme heat of St. Louis. Adding to their troubles were reports that had preceded them that the colonists were “possessors of great wealth”. Merchants over-charged them; townspeople came to gawk at them; and the colonists were worried about being robbed.
It was a curious procession of colonists that subsequently made its way to the Des Moines River valley.
As part of the prairie, wave after wave of grass grew as far as the eye could see, studded with wildflowers of every color. On 26 August 1847 they arrived at a place where stood a pole with a shingle nailed to the top, and on the shingle one word: "PELLA".

Pella, Iowa
In the U.S.A. Jan and Leipje seem to have had some additional daughters. For example, a daughter named Maria Aaltje was born on 31 March 1851 in Lake Prairie, Marion County, Iowa. Jan van der Linden died on 11 October 1895 and was buried in Pella. His wife had died 9 months earlier on 10 January. Their son Leendert was known in Pella as Lane VanderLinden (1838-1902).

Geertrui Papenvelt (1803-54) of Emden, Germany

Dutch translation of Geertruid's baptismal record
Geertrui Papenvelt was born on 12 June 1803 and baptized on the 16th in Emden, Germany. Her parents are Gerrit Papenvelt and Maria Noteboom. Her brother Jozef was born on 25 May 1805 and baptized there on the 30th.
Gerrit Papevelt died on 29 June 1817 in Emden. His death was registered in Dordrecht, Holland, on 22 November 1819. As a widow Geertrui’s mother lived in ‘s-Gravendeel, Holland. Maria Noteboom died there as Gerrit's widow on 9 August 1852, aged 74. Her parents are Joost Noteboom (†1787) and Jannigje Korsse de Jong (†1795).

Earlier, on 20 July 1826 in Vlaardingen, Holland, a woman named Teuntje Verboom had died as widow of Gerrit van Papenvelt. They had been married on 6 November 1796 in Vlaardingen, and they had had a son Arij Papevelt (1797-1854). Teuntje Verboom (1763-1826) was widow of Maarten Bos(ch). Gerrit Papenvelt was widower of Trijntje Noorthoek. This first marriage had taken place on 6 May 1791 in Vlaardingen, and the surviving children of Gerrit's first marriage were Johannis (1791-), Teunis (1793-1843) and Peije (1794-1813).
Did Gerrit Papenvelt move to Emden, Germany, to be able to contract a bigamous marriage to Maria Noteboom, or did Gerrit and Maria just pretend to be married, while living in Germany?

Soldier Jacob Kleinjan (†1788)

A pink type ship
Jacob Kleinjan started working for the Dutch East India Company (V.O.C.) as a soldier in 1786. He departed on October 24, 1786, from Rammekens in Zeeland, The Netherlands. The ship, named “Juffrouw Johanna” (which can be translated as “Miss Joan”), was a pink type sailing ship with a flat bottom, a narrow stern at the back and a large cargo capacity. The ship's captain was Simon Koter and its crew consisted of over 170 men.

Since 1652 a Cape Colony had been established by the Dutch on the Cape Peninsula in South Africa. The “Juffrouw Johanna” arrived at its Cape Hope on February 22, 1787, staying there until March 19. On June 9, 1787, t he ship and its crew arrived at its destination, Batavia (nowadays known as Jakarta) on the island of Java in Indonesia.
Within a year of his arrival Jacob Kleinjan died in Asia on May 7, 1788.

Batavia in Indonesia
According to the V.O.C. database Jacob Kleinjan originated from “Oostmont”, possibly Est Mont, Éperlecques, France.

The Kleinjan family and their American branch

Over the years I've also been researching the extensive Kleinjan family that originated in the Hoeksche Waard area in South-Holland. I descend from the elder generations of this extended family.
The oldest ancestor is Cleijn Jan Ariaensz who lived around 1600. His son, Arijen Jansz Cleijnjan, has descendants in Mijnsheerenland, Heinenoord, Barendrecht, Rhoon and even in Volga, Brookings, South Dakota. In 1664 one of Arie's sons, Jan Arijens Kleijnjan, married Haesje Cornelisse who originated from Charlois, now part of Rotterdam. Jan's burial was registered on 26-1-1712 in 's-Gravendeel.

Since the baptism records of the village of 's-Gravendeel are missing, children within the Kleinjan family that died young are unknown to us, and the links between subsequent generations can not always be proven. A possible son of Jan and Haesje was Arie Janse Kleinjan (†1713) who married Bastiaantje Floren van der Giessen (†1755), who introduced the given name Floris into the Kleinjan family. This couple had at least 2 sons, Floris and Jan, and 2 daughters, Johanna and Adriana. Adriana (±1705-1763) married Jan Anthonisse Duijser (1705-1764) and became one of my ancestors.

Floris Ariensz Kleinjan (±1700-1778) married twice, as did his son Jan Florisse Kleinjan (±1740-1802), who settled in Barendrecht. Then something strange happened. Jan's 2nd wife was Lena Pieters Louter (±1754-1829), who, as a widow, married Krijn Hendriks Vermaas (1754-1825). Both had children from their first marriage. In 1807 Krijn's unmarried, 18-year-old daughter Maria Krijne Vermaas became pregnant. She said that her stepbrother Kleijs Jansz Kleinjan (1790-1869) was the father, and named the child Kleijs after him. Strangely, Kleijs never bothered to marry his stepsister. In 1803 he married another girl, and had additional issue. Being an unmarried mother, Maria was "damaged goods", but in 1814 she was finally able to marry a widower from Sliedrecht, and had additional issue, too.

An elder brother of naughty Kleijs was Floris Janse Kleinjan (1769-1795) who married the widowed Jannetje Louter, who was 10 years his senior and a sister of his stepmother. Their eldest son was Pieter Florisse Kleinjan (1796-1872) who lived in Rhoon and married twice.

Jan "John" Kleinjan married Maria Adriaantje Huijgen

Het nieuws van den Dag, Kleine Courant, 4-11-1878

Jan "John" Kleinjan
One of their sons was Jan Kleinjan (1852-1926). In Poortugaal Jan fathered 10 children with his first wife, Maria Adriaantje Huijgen (1854-1893). As a widower Jan decided to emigrate with his children to the USA. In 1893 they travelled with the steamship Rotterdam with captain Roggeveen from Rotterdam to New York.
Initially, Jan seemed to have settled in Iowa, and later he lived in Volga, Brookings, South Dakota. There Jan was known as "John". His second wife was Maria Heiltje Vis, known as "Mary". They had 6 additional children: Leendert (who died from the flu epidemic in WW1), Gerrit, William, Helena, Floyd, and Marion.

J. Kleinjan and his children travelled with the S.S. Rotterdam to New York,

Recently, my father told me a story about an American Kleinjan who wanted to visit The Netherlands shortly after World War II. Apparently, to be able to do so, he needed to own something in The Netherlands. The Kleinjan family is a family of farmers, so he decided to export 3 tractors to relatives in the Hoeksche Waard, the first tractors to arrive in that area. The money he earned with the deal was deposited on a Dutch bank, thus allowing him to visit The Netherlands.
