Adriana Kits
Adriana Kits

In a previous blog post, I wrote about Jan Kits Nieuwenkamp (1811-1870) after I stumbled upon a newspaper article. He had been travelling with a steamship when it hit a rock, and he drowned. Recently, I came across a picture of his sister Christina Nieuwenkamp (1809-1887, below right). Christina married Jan Ludolph Kotting (1809-1844) who was clergyman, successively in Kwadijk and Alkmaar in Holland. Jan and Christina are both children of Jan Mattheus Nieuwenkamp (1764-1824) and his third wife Adriana Kits (1774-1881, to the right).

Jan Mattheus Nieuwenkamp and his wife Adriana also had a son Abraham, who was baptised on 4 March 1800 in Amsterdam. Abraham Nieuwenkamp (23) was a bookseller when he married Petronella Kotting (31) in Amsterdam on 23 May 1823. Petronella is a daughter of shopkeeper Jan Ludolph Kotting (†1830) sr. and his wife Jannetje Brinkel (1797). Within a year after her wedding, Petronella died on 18 May 1824, 8 days after giving birth to a dead daughter.
Her widower, Abraham Nieuwenkamp, married his first wife’s younger sister Geertruid Kotting (28) on 24 February 1826 in Amsterdam. Geertruid was baptised on 21 June 1797 in the Zuiderkerk, another church in Amsterdam. They had issue, including a son Adrianus Nieuwenkamp, born on 30 November 1835 in Amsterdam. Geertruid Kotting, aged 50, died in Amsterdam on 15 August 1847. Her widower Abraham Nieuwenkamp died in Amsterdam on 1 January 1866.

Christina Nieuwenkamp (to the right) was born on 5 May 1809 in Hasselt.  Her husband, clergyman Jan Ludolph Kotting, was baptised in Amsterdam on 12 February 1809 with witnesses Anna Maria Kotting and his grandfather Jan Ludolph Kotting sr. The parents are pharmacist Gerardus Kotting (1785-1852) and his wife Maria Elisabeth Gude (1849).
Jan Ludolph died of scarlet fever at the age of 35 on 29 May 1844 in his parent’s home in Alkmaar. After a widowhood of 43 years, Christina Nieuwenkamp died on 23 July 1887 at the age of 78. They had 7 children, including a son Gerardus Kotting, who was working as a pharmacist, and a daughter Christina Kotting.

Christina Kotting was born on 17 December 1841 in Alkmaar. She married her first cousin Adrianus Nieuwenkamp in Amsterdam on 7 May 1868. Adrianus is the son of Abraham Nieuwenkamp and his second wife Geertruid Kotting (as described above). At the age of 82, Adrianus Nieuwenkamp died on 20 July 1918 in Haarlem, Holland, and was buried there on the 23th. His widow, Christina Kotting, died in Haarlem on 10 February 1921.

In 1870 Jan Kits Nieuwenkamp drowned off the Irish coast

On her twelfth Atlantic crossing, the British cargo-passenger steamship “Cambria” departed New York on October 8, 1870, under the command of Captain John Carnighan, carrying a general cargo, a crew of 74, and 105 passengers. Two of those passengers were 59-year-old widower Jan Kits Nieuwenkamp, and his 23-year-old daughter Lobetta Johanna.

Algemeen Handelsblad, 13-11-1870

On October 19, around 11:00 pm, the steamship “Cambria” was sailing in heavy seas when it struck Tor Beg Rock, half a mile north-west of Inishtrahull Island. The vessel immediately commenced to fill with water, thus it became at once evident that a large hole bad been made in the ship. Lifeboats were launched, but the only survivor was a passenger named John M'Gartland. Four lifeboats were found empty at the Giant's Causeway, while the stern of the ship drifted ashore at Islay, Scotland.

Opregte Haarlemsche Courant, 26-10-1870

The drowning of Jan Kits Nieuwenkamp and his daughter wasn't the only disaster that struck his family in the year 1870. On January 21, 1870, in Zutphen, his youngest son Jan junior had died “after a short but intense suffering” at the age of 16. By the end of 1870, only 6 of Jan's 14 children were still alive.

Coenraad Rijsdijk (1844-1923) married his niece Pietertje Rijsdijk (1869-1946)

Coenraad Rijsdijk was born on 20 June 1844 in IJsselmonde, Holland. His parents are Arij Rijsdijk (1815-1883) “the elder” and his first wife Pietertje Mens (1820-1847). Coenraad had an elder brother Arie Rijsdijk “the younger”, born on 29 October 1841 in IJsselmonde.
After their mother’s death on 20 November 1847 in nearby Ridderkerk, their father married Lena de Ruiter on 14-3-1840 in nearby Barendrecht. By the time Arij “the elder” married his third wife, Maria Monfrooij (1826-1892), on 10 September 1880 in IJsselmonde, Coenraad was already a married man.

Coenraad’s elder brother Arij “the younger” was the first to marry on 27 June 1863 in IJsselmonde. His bride was Maria Wuister (1840-1880). Maria and Arij had several children, including a daughter Pietertje Rijsdijk, born on 30 January 1869 in IJsselmonde. Arie Rijsdijk “the younger”, aged 29, died on 30 April 1871 in Charlois, now part of Rotterdam. His widow Marie Wuister died at the age of 39 on 4 March 1880 in Barendrecht, leaving her daughter Pietertje an orphan at the age of 11. Thus, Pietertje's uncle Coenraad Rijsdijk became her guardian.

At the age of 23, on 24 April 1868 in IJsselmonde, Coenraad Rijsdijk had married 20-year-old Trijntje de Ruiter. She was born on 12 August 1847 in IJsselmonde, and her parents were Arie de Ruiter (1796-1863) and Pieterje van der Velde (1809-1890). Coenraad and Trijntje had 10 children, but most of them died young, including twin daughters. Trijntje died on 26 March 1886 in Spaarndam, Holland, 2 weeks after giving birth to her youngest daughter, who died young, too.
The next year, on 24 March 1887 in Barendrecht, 42-year-old Coenraad Rijsdijk married his 18-year-old niece Pietertje Rijsdijk whose guardian he was. On 29 November 1886 the couple had obtained a special permission to marry, because an uncle-niece marriage is usually not allowed. The couple also got permission to marry without fees, because they were poor, so Coenraad’s job as “merchant” was likely more like a humble door-to-door salesman.

Dutch King Willem III gave permission for this uncle-niece marriage

Pietertje Rijswijk gave birth to a death baby in IJsselmonde on 22 July 1887 around 4 o’clock. It’s unknown if the baby was either a miscarriage, or full-term - and then conceived before the wedding ceremony. Three more pregnancies resulted in lifeless children. Twelve other pregnancies were successful, but half of those children died young anyway.

Short Marriage - Adriana Bos (1838-61) and Teunis de Vos

Adriana Bos was born on 12 August 1838 in Goudriaan, Holland. Her parents are Niesje de Pater (1809-1883) and Jacob Bos (1809-1866), son of another Jacob Bos (1766-1837) and Adriana den Branker (1777-1814). Adriana's great-grandparents are Jan Bos and Elisabeth (“Lijsbeth”) Kwakernaak who were married in Goudriaan in 1761. Bos is a common surname in The Netherlands; this family is not related to my paternal Bos ancestors at all.

Adriana Bos had younger siblings Niesje, Metje, Jacob and Fop Hendrik Bos who all reached adulthood. At the age of 19, Adriana was the first to marry. On 24 April 1858 in Giessendam, Holland, she married 31-year-old Teunis de Vos. Teunis was born on 21 July 1826 in Giessendam as son of Gerrit de Vos (1796-1830) and Annigje Kuiper. Teunis was just 4 years old when his father died.

Teunis' young wife Adriana gave birth to 2 healthy sons. She died at the age of 22 in Giessendam on 25 January 1861. She had been married for just 2¾ year.
Adriana had a slightly younger sister Niesje Bos who was born on 24 September 1839 in Goudriaan. She was married in Giessendam on 25 April 1865 to Adriana's widower Teunis de Vos. Subsequently Niesje gave birth to 4 children, but 2 of them died as a baby.

These are Teunis' children:
  1. Gerrit Pieter (Gerrit) de Vos was born on 12-3-1859 in Giessendam. In 1880 Gerrit married his first cousin Lijstje de Vos (1858-1921). She is a daughter of Willem Matthijs de Vos, one of Teunis' brothers. Gerrit died on 21-11-1909 in Ridderkerk in Holland, aged 50.
  2. Jacob Willem de Vos was born on 9-3-1860 in Giessendam. He married Willempje Muilwijk in 1856. He died on 16-7-1933 in Giessen-Nieuwkerk, aged 73.

  4. Adrianus de Vos was born on 28-12-1866 in Giessendam. He died there on 5-4-1867.
  5. Niesje de Vos was born on 12-2-1868 in Giessendam. At the age of 55, Niesje married widower Cornelis Gerrit Westerhout (1857-1936). Niesje died on 3-11-1945 in Haarlem, aged 77.
  6. Adriana de Vos was born on 21-4-1872 in Giessendam. She died there on 3-9-1872.
Teunis de Vos died on 5 August 1892 in Giessendam, aged 66. At the time his 4 surviving children were still alive. Teunis' eldest son Gerrit died in 1909, aged 50. Niesje Bos died on 16 August 1921 in Giessendam, aged 81. She had a surviving sister Metje Bos, born on 20 April 1841 in Goudriaan, who died at the age of 90 on 3 August 1931 in Giessendam. She had married Gerrit Rietveld (1844-1932).

Josephus Andibarila & his Borel descendants in 's-Gravendeel

The Borel family of 's-Gravendeel, Holland, descends from Josephus Franciscus Wilhelmus (“Joseph”) Andibarila who signed his name as "Joseph Andeberrela". He was born around 1788 in Antwerp, Belgium. Given the sound of his surname, and the fact that his eldest son had brown eyes and black hair, his ancestors probably originated somewhere around the Mediterranean.

Joseph was tailor by profession. He was married in May 1801 in Strijen to Anna Bakkers. The marriage banns were published on April 17 and 5 and May 3. Anna originated in Strijen and was a daughter of Arnoldus Bakkers and his wife Margrietta Pallee/Polle/Pale. Given the obvious spelling problems, Anna's mother likely had foreign ancestors, too.

Josephus Andibarilla of Antwerp married Anna Bakker of Strijen in 1801 in Strijen.

Joseph and Anna had children named Wilhelmus, Margaretha (1803-1870), Arnoldus, Anna Cornelia (1807-1867), Josephus (j†), Josephus Franciscus & Maria (j†). They were living in a little neighborhoods named Mookhook and Schenkeldijk, located between 's-Gravendeel and Strijen. However, they had their children baptized in the city of Dordrecht according to a special movement within the Catholic faith.
Apparently, the pronunciation of Joseph's surname was so problematic for the Dutch that he changed it to “Borel”.
Anna Bakkers died on May 17, 1841, around 20:00 in Strijen. Joseph Borel, her widower, died in Strijen on February 18, 1846, around 18:30.

Joseph's eldest son Wilhelmus “Willem” Borel was born on July 3, 1802 in Mookhoek. He was baptized on July 18th in Dordrecht. He was married on August 6, 1835, in Strijen to 30-year-old Ariaantje Tuk. Ariaantje had had an illegitimate son Pieter in 1832 who died in 1833, and another on April 29, 1835, in 's-Gravendeel. Willem Borel acknowledged this last Pieter as his son when he married Ariaantje. That doesn't necessarily mean that Pieter actually is his biological son. After their marriage, Ariaantje gave birth to another son Adrianus Borel (1838-1880) who appears to have remained unmarried.

Josephus Borel was living at the Schenkeldijk near Strijen when he had his son Arnoldus baptized in Dordrecht in 1803.

Joseph's second son Arnoldus Borel was born in 1804 at the Schenkeldijk near Strijen. He was baptized on September 8, 1804, in Dordrecht. He was married on September 20, 1834, in 's-Gravendeel to Huibje Katoen (1800-1879). She was a widow who had had 7 children in her first marriage, and 4 of them were still alive. With Arnoldus Borel Huibje had 9 more children, but their son Joost was the only one who survived to adulthood. Joost was born on October 3, 1836, in 's-Gravendeel. In 1862 he married Neeltje Vermaas (1839-1922). Among their many children was a son named Huibert Borel who married and had a son named Joost.

A double first cousins marriage in the Warrebie family in Dordrecht

Johannes (Jan) Warrebie (1746-1775) and Hendrina Warrebie (1736-1785) were married on 5 May 1771 in Dordrecht, The Netherlands. Their surname is spelled in different ways. Jan, for example, was baptized in Dordrecht on 23 October 1746 as a younger son of Thomas Warbie and Elisabeth de Raad (1706-1797). Hendrina was baptized in Dordrecht on 14-3-1736 as eldest daughter of Tristom Warbie and Aartie de Raad (1713-1785).

Jan Warrebie and Henderijntje Warrebie were married on 5 May 1771 in Dordrecht
Their fathers were brothers and their mothers were sisters, so Jan and Hendrina had the same 4 grandparents: Thomas Warbie (±1670-1732), Catharina 't Hooft (1675-1746), Denijs de Raad and Hendrikje Troost (1677-±1749). Jan and Hendrina Warrebie had two children: Anthonij (1772-1807) and Aartje (1774-1802). Jan Warrebie was buried on 4 March 1775 in Dordrecht.

Dordrecht
Hendrina Warrebie's remarriage was on 2 July 1780 in Dordrecht. Her new husband was Hendrik Sleper (also: Slijpers). He had been born in Limburg, the southeastern part of the Netherlands. Their daughter Anna was baptized in Dordrecht on 19 November 1780. Hendrik may have died soon afterwards, for Hendrina was a widow again when she was buried on 1 January 1785 in Dordrecht, aged just 28.
Their son Anthonij was married in 1802 in Dordrecht and had two children, too, before he died on 24 September 1807, aged 35, while serving as a sailor on the Dutch fleet.

Anthonij Warrebie was serving as a sailor on the Dutch fleet when he died op 25-8-1807.
