George Springvloed (1867-1950) & Cornelia Vroegindeweij (1867-1928)

Middelharnis
George Springvloed was born on 3 December 1867 in Sommelsdijk, Holland, as the 12th and youngest child of Arnoldus Springvloed (1822-1904) and his wife Willempje Spee (1824-1908). George was named after his paternal grandfather, while two elder, same-named siblings had died young. Georg's surname Springvloed can be translated as spring tide" which is an appropriate name for someone living on an isle that - at that time - was in open connection with the North Sea.

George was married op 19 April 1889 in Middelharnis to Cornelia Vroegindeweij. She is a daughter of Arend Vroegindeweij (1834-1921) and Jacoba van der Groef (1837-1928). Her birth was on 5 July 1867 in Sommelsdijk. Cornelia has an interesting surname, too, that can be translated as “early in the meadow” and is sometimes written as Vroeg in de Weij. The Vroegindeweij family descends from a Dammis Vroegindeweij who was living in 's-Gravendeel, Holland, in the 17th century.

Nederlandsche Staatscourant, 4-2-1909

George was working as a shoemaker in Sommelsdijk. At the beginning of 1909, he was declared bankrupt, although that bankruptcy was withdrawn shortly thereafter. Still, later that same year George left with his family for the USA.

De Maasbode, 21-2-1909

Cornelia Vroegindeweij died there in 1928. George Springvloed died in 1950 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They had 7 children.
