Peter Gerrit Vos & Anneke Nederveen in Colorado, USA

On 12 November, 1892, a total of 28 families with their 116 children and another 31 single persons boarded the steamship "Dubbeldam" in Amsterdam, Holland. Among them were Peter Gerrit Vos and Anneke Nederveen and their 2 children. The couple had been married on 18 December, 1875, in Almkerk, Brabant, The Netherlands.
Anneke Nederveen was born on 11 March, 1838, in Oudenbosch, Brabant. Her parents are Wouter Nederveen (1803-1867) and Maria Hagens. Peter Gerrit Vos was born in Almkerk on 7 April, 1839, as a younger son of Krijn Vos (1799-1866) and Adriaantje Confurius (1797-1875). His paternal grandparents are Bastiaan Vos and Jacoba Nieuwenhuizen. 
In Almkerk Peter Gerrit and Anneke had become the parents of 2 children: Maria Wouterina, born on 13 October, 1876, and Adriaan, born on 22 November, 1878.

The immigrants on board steamship "Dubbeldam" arrived in Hoboken, New Jersey, where they were met by Albertus Zoutman and Cornelis W. Van der Hoogt. They accompanied the newcomers to the San Luis Valley north of Alamosa where they arrived on November 30, 1892. Soon the immigrants discovered that the dazzling prospects described in the brochure were diametrically opposed to the facts.

On January 31, 1893, 14 families and 6 single men left for Crook with a special train - the fare paid by the Immigration Company. About 10 days later Arnaud J. Van Lummel and Andries Bruintjes, immigrants from the "Empire Farm" near Alamosa, visited their fellow Dutchmen in northeastern Colorado. They found the colonists there in a wretched condition, some of them still living in railroad cars of the Union Pacific, parked on a side track. Several weeks later, the immigrants were "huddled together in two barn-like structures." Soon some of the Dutch children were stricken with diphtheria and scarlet fever.

How Geen Klootwijk descends from Geen Bakker

Genis is a quite unique first name among my ancestors. I can remember my great-uncle Genis Klootwijk at Tweede Tol, a tiny township south of Dordrecht. I descend from his sister Jannigje (“Jansje”) Klootwijk (1906-1965). They had eight other siblings of whom just one died young due to a spina bifida birth defect. Alas, none of those siblings named one of their sons Genis.
Still, in the 19th century the name Genis was repeatedly used within the Brand family of Dubbeldam.

This is how 20th-century Genis Klootwijk descends from 18th-century Geen Bakker:

1. Genis (“Geen”) Klootwijk was born on 17-2-1905 in Dubbeldam. He died op 27-3-1991 in Dordrecht and was buried there op 22-4-1991. He was married, but his marriage remained childless.
2. Adriana (“Adriaantje”) Klootwijk (1880-1965) was married in Dubbeldam in 1902 to Pieter Klootwijk (1895-1964). They had 10 children.
4. Genis Brand was born on 11-10-1857 in Wieldrecht and died in Dubbeldam on 21-9-1930. He was married on 20-3-1879 in Dubbeldam to Jannigje van Houwelingen. She was born on 9-8-1857 in Steefkerk and die don 29-3-1936 in Dordrecht. They had 11 children.
8. Arij Brand (1827-1891) was married in 1852 in Wieldrecht to Adriana Aaldijk (1832-1874). They had 13 children. 
16. Genis Brand was born on 18-2-1802 and baptized on the 21th in Dubbeldam. He was an agrarian living in a farm at the Wieldrechtsche Zeedijk in Dubbeldam. Genis died in Dubbeldam on 21-3-1844. He was married on 31-5-1823 in Dubbeldam to Willemijntje Booij. She was born on 21-3-1800, baptized on the 30th in Dubbeldam, and died on 29-5-1878 in Dubbeldam. They had 8 children. 
32. Leijsje Cornelisse Koorneef (1777-1841) was married in 1797 in Dubbeldam to Arij Huijgen Brand (1766-1837). They had 9 children.
64. Neeltje Geenen Bakker was married in 1774 in Dubbeldam to Cornelis Danielsz. Koorneef.
128. Geen Pieterse Bakker was baptized on 13-10-1709 in Ouderkerk aan den IJssel. He was married on 29-6-1732 in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht to Lijsje Jansse Wens. She was baptized in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht on 23-5-1706. 
256. Pieter Geenen was born in Stormpolder. He was married on 2-12-1700 in Zuidland to Lijsbeth Pieterse Droogendijck. She wase baptized on 8-10-1679 in Zuidland.

They were all living in Holland.

Geen Pieterse Bakker was so poor he didn't have to pay for his marriage to Lijsbet Jans Wens.

Wilhelm Heinrich Fiegenbaum - from Tecklenburg to Rotterdam

In the 18th century, several men with the surname Vijgeboom were living in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. When marrying, their place as origin was given as Ladbergen in the Tecklenburg area in Germany. Two of them were named Willem Hendrik and Jan Dirk.

When Willem Hendrik Vijgeboom died on 21 November 1804 in Rotterdam-Cool, he was described as being 70 years and 3 months old. His body was transported to Rotterdam on the 24th. He was buried in Rotterdam on the 26th. The website www.fiegenbaum.org features a Wilhelm Heinrich Fiegenbaum, born or baptized on 24 September 1734 in Ladbergen as the eldest son of Anna Elisabeth Fiegenbaum (1711-1770) and Hermann Wiethoff (†1758). This couple's 11 children used thier mother's surname.
Wilhelm Heinrich had a younger brother Johann Diederich Fiegenbaum, born or baptized on 12 October 1738 in Ladbergen. He must be the Jan Dirk Vijgeboom, father of Adolf Vijgeboom (1767-1823) and Johann Wilhelm (“Jan Willem”) Vijgeboom (1773-1845). Another son was Herman Hendrik Vijgeboom (1763-1822) who married his cousin Elisabeth Vijgeboom (1761-1827), a daughter of Wilhelm Heinrich Fiegenbaum aka Willem Hendrik Vijgeboom, the main subject of this post.

Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Willem Hendrik Vijgeboom was firstly married in 1761 in Rotterdam to Catharina (“Katrina”) Goudtfijn and they had 3 daughters: Elisabeth, Hendrina and Johanna. Willem Hendrik was married secondly in 1772 in Capelle aan de IJssel in Holland to Adriana Kampsteeg (1740-1813). They had additional 5 children including a son named Johannes Diederik Willem Vijgeboom who was baptized on 7 July 1782 in Rotterdam. He was to live in Bergen op Zoom and Goes where he died on 12 December 1815.

Tecklenburg in Germany

Wilhelm Heinrich (Willem Hendrik) Vijgeboom was baptized on 24 September 1734 in Ladbergen, Tecklenburg, Germany. His parents are Hermann Wiethoff (†1758) en Anna Elisabeth Fiegenbaum (1711-1770). In 1761 Willem Hendrik was living “op het Oostende” in Rotterdam. In 1773 Willem Hendrik was living “buijte de Schiedamse poort” – on the outside of the western city gate. In 1775 and 1777 Willem Hendrik was living “aan ’t Niewe Werk”. Three of Willem Hendrik’s children were buried in Kralingen (nowadays part of Rotterdam) on 28 July 1764, 20 September 1764 and 16 November 1768. Willem Hendrik was a witness to the baptism of grandson Willem Henderik Vijgeboom on 1 January 1791 in Rotterdam. Willem Hendrik died on 21 November 1804 in Rotterdam, Cool, at the age of 70 years and 3 months. He was buried in Rotterdam on the 26th. 
Willem Hendrik was married to

1. Catharina (Katrina) Goutfijn on 9 June 1761 in Rotterdam. Katrina was baptized in Rotterdam on 4 April 1735. Her parents are Hendrik Goutfijn (†1750) and his second wife Hendrijntje Kodde. 
2. Adriana Kampsteeg on 18 October 1722 in Capelle aan de IJssel. Adriana was baptized on 9 October 1740 in Hardinxveld. Her parents are Jan Rokusz. Kampsteegh and his second wife Neeltje Cornelise Bakker. Adriana was a witness at the baptism of her step-grandson Johan Diederik Vijgeboom on 16 December 1790 in Rotterdam. Adriana died on 7 April 1813 in Rotterdam.

Willem Hendrik fathered the following children:

1. Elisabeth Vijgeboom was baptized on 4 November 1761 in Rotterdam with witness Johanna Gautfeijn (Goutfijn). Elisabeth was witness at the baptism of her grandson Herman Hendrik Willem Vijgeboom on 11 November 1810 in Rotterdam. Elisabeth was married on 23 January 1790 in Rotterdam to her cousin Herman Hendrik Vijgeboom. Herman Hendrik was born or baptized on 1 May 1763 in Ladbergen, Tecklenburg, Germany, as son of Johann Diederich Fiegenbaum and his first wife Elisabeth. Herman Hendrik died on 16 May 1822 in Rotterdam, at the age of 59 years and 15 days. His widow, Elisabeth Vijgeboom, died on 11 February 1827 in Rotterdam. This couple had 6 children: Johan Diederik, Willem Henderik (1791-1864), Anna Catharina Geertruida (1793-1795), Neeltje (1794-1795), Catharina Hendrika (1797-1817) and Herman Henderik (1798-1800).
2. Hendrina Vijgeboom was baptized on 1 May 1763 in Kralingen with witness Johanna Goudtfijn. She may be one of the children that was buried in 1764 in Kralingen.
3. Johanna Vijgeboom was baptized on 29 January 1766 in Kralingen with witness Hendrina Ko(d)de (her maternal grandmother). 
4. Neeltie Vijgeboom was baptized on 13 July 1773 in Rotterdam. 
5. Maria Vijgeboom was baptized on 7 June 1775 in Rotterdam. Her death was recorded on 23 October 1778 in Rotterdam, Cool. She was buried on 26-10-1778 in Hillegersberg (nowadays part of Rotterdam). 
6. Catharina Vijgeboom was baptized on 16 February 1777 in the Zuiderkerk church in Rotterdam. Catharina was married on 14 May 1797 in Rotterdam to  Herman Hendrik Kiewit who originated in Westerkappeln, Tecklenburg, Germany. They had children named Jan Jacob Herman Kiewit and Adriana Wilhelmina Kiewit. Herman Hendrik Kiewit died on 17 December 1835 in Rotterdam, at the age of 42 years and 21 days. Catharina Vijgeboom died on 13 March 1852 in Rotterdam.
7. Theodora or Theodoris Vijgeboom was baptized on 23 August 1778 in Rotterdam and buried there on 27 July 1781.
8. Johannes Diederik Willem (“Jan”) Vijgeboom was baptized on 7 July 1782 in Rotterdam with witness Fransina Koops (wife of Arij Kampsteeg). Jan lived for a while in Bergen op Zoom. In 1811 he moved to Goes, Zeeland, The Netherlands. He died in Goes on 18 December 1815. His widow, Jannetje Keulaar (±1784-1832), married Pieter Carel Reijnders in 1821. He was remarried in 1836 to Antonia van der Maas, widow of Jacobus Johannes van Driel.

Longevity ~ Kniertje Verschoor (90) in Heinenoord, Holland

Kniertje Verschoor was 90 years and 5 months old, when she died on 22 August 1893 in Heinenoord, South-Holland, The Netherlands. Kniertje was born there on 20 March 1803 as a younger daughter of Gerrit Verschoor, whose ancestors originated in Charlois (now part of the city of Rotterdam), and Lijntje Weda, who originated in nearby West-IJsselmonde. 

Heinenoord

On 23 December 1824 around 13:00 in Heinenoord Kniertje Verschoor gave birth to an illegitimate son she named Leendert. The baby may have been named after its unknown father. The next day the midwife, 64-year-old Ida Bouwens, reported the birth to the authorities. At the age of 1, the baby died in Heinenoord on 23 April 1826. 

At the age of 26, Kniertje Verschoor was married on 23 September 1829 in Heinenoord. Her groom was Arij Dekker (1801-1882), son of another Arij Dekker (1765-1812) and his wife Jannigje, a daughter of Mozes Vollaart. As a married woman Kniertje had 10 additional children: Lijntje, Jannigje (1833-71), Gerritje (1835-59), 2 sons named Arij, Gerrit (1838-39), Geertrui, and 2 daughters named Magdalena. Their younger son Arij Verschoor (1839-1921) married and had issue, too.
