Arie Toll (1834-1915) and his 3 wives

When Arie Tol married his second wife Neeltje Mouthaan, it was stated in the marriage registration that his father Aart was resident in Pella in the USA. Arie Tol was born on 25 August 1834 in Nieuw-Beijerland, Holland. He was the seventh of 14 children of Aart Tol and Neesje de Jong (1804-1850). While many of his siblings had died young, Arie survived. He was 16 when his mother died, aged 46.

When Arie Tol married his second wife on 10-10-1867, his father was in Pella.

Arie Tol was first married on 7 October 1853 in Heerjansdam, Holland, to Jannetje van der Mast. She was born 14 July 1827 in ‘s-Gravendeel, Holland. Her parents are Johannes van der Mast (1792-1857) and his first wife Adriaantje Naaktgeboren (1796-1828). They had 5 children before Jannetje died on 17 January 1867 in Rhoon. Holland.

Arie Tol was remarried on 10 October 1867 in Barendrecht, Holland. His second wife, Neeltje Mouthaan, was born on 18 June 1834 in Middelharnis, Holland. She was the widow of Cornelis Tulp, and had a surviving son of her first marriage named Simon. On 1 August 1869 Neeltje gave birth to a son named Arij who died after 11 days. Neeltje died on 12 September in Haarlemmermeer.

Arie Tol married his third wife, Arendje, on 11 July 1872 in IJsselmonde, Holland. She was born on 25 April 1849 in Ridderkerk, Holland. Her parents are Arie Zevenbergen and Neeltje Schilperoort. Arendje gave birth to 7 additional children. The youngest, Annetje, was born on 26 April 1888 in Zwijndrecht, Holland.

Somewhere between 1888 and 1896, Arie Tol and his third wife Arendje left for the USA. They were accompanied by Arie’s youngest daughter with his first wife, and the five surviving children of his third marriage. They settled in Pella, Iowa, and added an extra ‘l’ to their surname. Three of his daughters married three sons of Jan van Engelenhoven (1830-1915) and his wife Jansje Hessink (1834-1881) who originated in Ede in The Netherlands.

Arie Tol and his third wife are buried in Pella.

Arie Tol died, aged 80, on 25 February 1915 in Pella. His widow Arendje died in 1919. Arie’s son Jan - who had remained in The Netherlands – died at the age of 82 in Barendrecht the winter of 1939-1940. At that time his only remaining sibling was Gieltje (“Gertie”) Toll in the USA who died in Pella on 21 June 1973, aged 88.

2. Jan and his twin Johannes were born on 25-9-1857 in Rhoon. Jan was married in 1883 to Neeltje van der Staaij and had several children. Jan died in the winter of 1939-1940, aged 82.
3. Johannes and his twin Jan were born on 25-9-1857 in Rhoon. Johannes was married in 1883 to Maria van Oosten. Johannes died on 26-4-1922 in Hillegom, Holland, at the age of 64.
4. Neesje (Agnes) was born on 8-11-1861 in Rhoon. Agnes was married in 1884 to Nicolaus D.C. Pieete and had children. Nicolaus died in June 1931. Agnes died on 6-12-1931 in Rotterdam.
5. Jaantje (Jennie) was born on 25-9-1865 in Rhoon. She traveled with her parents to the USA where she married Henry Krouse (1860-1943) and had children. Jennie died on 17-5-1908 in Tracy, Marion County, Iowa, aged 42.
6. Arij was born on 1-08-1869 in Rhoon, and died there on 12-8-1869, aged 11 days.
7. Arie Izaak (Arie) was born on 31-5-1873 in Barendrecht. In 1900 he married Hattie Plate and had 7 children. Arie died on 7-5-1928 in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
8. Aartje was born on 6-9-1875 in Barendrecht, and died there on 22-3-1877, aged 1.
9. Aartje (Artie) was born on 12-1-1878 in Barendrecht. In 1896 Artie married Edward Hunt and had a daughter before her marriages ended in divorce. With her second husband, Charles Voss, Artie had tree more children.
10. Neeltje (Nellie) was born on 13-7-1880 in Barendrecht. Nellie married Everett van Engelenhoven (1872-1904). As a widow she became one of the four spouses of Teunis Klootwyk (1865-1938). Nellie died on 7-9-1911 in Marion County, Iowa, aged just 31.
11. Trijntje (Kate) was born on 22-11-1881 in Barendrecht. Kate married Benjamin van Engelenhoven (1875-1939) and died on 17-9-1936 in Leighton, Iowa.
12. Gieltje (Gertie) was born on 4-2-1885 around 14:00 in Barendrecht. Gertie married Peter van Engelenhoven (1863-1944) and had children. Gertie died on 21-6-1973 in Pella, Iowa.
13. Annetje (Anna) was born on 26-4-1888 in Zwijndrecht. Anna married Arie Kelderman (1885-1969) and had children. Anna died, aged 40, on 9-10-1928 in Marion County, Iowa.
