Jacobus Wilhelmus Casparus Backer (1758-1834) & family

Jacobus Wilhelmus Casparus Backer was chief constable of police, and warden of the prison in Tiel. He passed away in Tiel on 17 July 1834, at the age of 85. His wife, Margaretha Polmans, originated from Bruges in Belgium, and had died at the age of 78 on 11 March 1824.

Jacobus Wilhelmus Casparus Backer was baptised on 19 December 1758 in Altforst (in the Betuwe area of The Netherlands). His father Hendrik Gijsbert Backer (1731-1796) and mother Bernhardina Elisabeth ("Barendina") Eilbracht, were married on 7 April 1752 in Altforst. Two years later, on 26 April 1754, Johannes Egbertus Backer - Hendrik Gijsbert's brother - and Jacoba Maria Eilbracht - Barendina's sister - were married, too. Both couples had several children.

Jacobus Wilhelmus Casparus Backer had several siblings, including Gerardus Petrus Backer who married Christina van Summeren. They are the parents of teacher Hendrik Gijsbert Backer (1794-1881). He was one of the 2 people whose name is above on the obituary for his great-uncle, the chief constable.

On 14 August 1817 in Hardinxveld Hendrik Gijsbert Backer married Cornelia de Geus (1791-1830) who originated in Werkendam. They had several children, including a daughter Antonia Gerarda Backer (1820-1910). In later life she married silversmith Leonard Philip Weisfelt, widower of Johanna Pequegnat. Antonia Gerarda died at the age of 90 and nearly 3 months.
Cornelia de Geus died on 30 August 1830 in Zaltbomml as a result of typhoid fever. She left behind 5 children.
As a 38-year-old widower, Hendrik Gijsbert was remarried on 25 July 1832 in Hardinxveld to 21-year-old Jacoba Philippina Schouten (1811-1878). She had given birth to a son 16 days earlier, who was mentioned in the wedding registration, but the baby died within 5 months. Several more children were born from this marriage, including a son Johan Willem Backer (1837-1914).
Jacoba Philippina Schouten died at the age of 67 on 28 November 1878 in Zaltbommel. Her widower Hendrik Gijsbert Backer died there on 22 April 1881, aged 86.
