When Aart decided to emigrate to the USA around 1847, he was accompanied by his father Gijs (79), his wife, their 7 remaining children and his younger brother Gijs (34) with his wife and children:
- Gijsbert (Gijs Sr.), 79 years, farmer, born in 1768 in Kedichem, died in 1849
- Aart, 47, carpenter, born in 1799 in Nieuwland
- Dirkje [Sterk], 37, housewife, born in 1809
- Elisabeth (Elizabeth), 16, daughter, born in 1831 (twin with Gijsbertje, who died young)
- Egje, 13, daughter, born in 1833
- Gijsbert, 12, child, male, born in 1835 (a same-named elder brother had died young)
- Cornelis (Kornelis), 11, child, male, born in 1836, married Evertje ("Eva") van der Haar, and died in 1899 in Leighton, Mahaska County, Iowa
- Jan, 5, child, male, born in 1841 (a same-named elder brother had died young)
- Cathanna (Katrina), 2, child, female, born in 1845
- Peter, 1, child, male, born in 1846
- Gijsbert (Gijs Jr.), 34, farmer, born in 1814 in Meerkerk
- Margje [Kappetijn], 35, housewife, born in 1812 in Benschop
- Gijsbert, 11, child, male
- Aart , 9, child, male
