Moritz Marx (1847-1888) & his brother Benjamin

An alliterative name is a name in which the first and last names begin with the same sound, like Moritz Marx. Moritz was born in Cologne (Köln) in Germany on 15 December 1847. His parents are Emanuel Benjamin Marx and Therese Koppel. Therese was born on 4 August 1821 in Solingen, Germany. Her father is Samuel Coppel (1782-1867). Theresa died as a widow, aged 60, on 24 June 1882 in Rotterdam, Holland.

Moritz Marx had a brother Benjamin, born on 22 September 1845 in Cologne, and their youngest brother was named Hermann. Moritz Marx was living in Rotterdam when he became a Dutch citizen on 22 July 1882 at the age of 34. Moritz Marx died at the age of 40 on 16 October 1888 in Rotterdam.

In 1890 banker Benjamin Marx started a company with his brother Hermann Marx and Jacob Christoph Kerkhoven, both attorneys, manufacturer Pieter Kerkhoven and lawyer Carel Eduard Havelaar. The factory was named “Rotterdamsche Margarinefabriek”, and was intended to produce alternatives to butter.
Early 1899, Benjamin Marx and Pieter Johannes van Ommeren were owners of a company named “Marx en Co”.

Benjamin Marx had married Antonia Maria Anna Wolff on 11 August 1878. She was born on 4 December 1854 in Mainz, Germany. In 1879 the couple had a son who died as a baby. In 1880 a son Alfred Jacques was born, who reached maturity.
Benjamin died on 13 June 1910 in Rotterdam. His only surviving son was married in May 1911. In the winter of 1930-1931 Benjamin's widow, aged 76, was placed under guardianship at her own request. She died on 12 February 1932 in The Hague.

  1. Moritz Marx, b. 15-12-1847 in Cologne, d. 16-10-1888 in Rotterdam.
  2. Benjamin Marx, b. 22-9-1845 in Cologne, d. 13-6-1910 in Rotterdam. He m. 11-8-1878 Antonia Maria Anna Wolff, b. 4-12-185 in Mainz, d. 12-2-1932 in The Hague. Children:
    • Eduard Marx, b. 29-10-1879, d. 23-11-1879 in Rotterdam.
    • Alfred Jacques Marx, b. 23-12-1880 in Rotterdam, d. 22-10-1943 in Auschwitz. In Wilmersdorf judge Alfred m. 3-5-1911 Josepha Valentine Henschel, b. 22-7-1889 in Berlin, d. 23-6-1976 in Zeist. They had 5 children.
  3. Hermann Marx, b. in Cologne ca. 1850, d. 13-1-1917 in Rotterdam, aged 66. He m. Laura Wolff. Child:
    • Eugen Marx, b. in Mannheim ca. 1879, d. 15-5-1940 in Rotterdam, aged 60.
