Jacobus Buttenaer had a strong constitution. Traveling to Asia was a health risk in the 18th century, but Jacobus survived the crossing. He participated in a war in Makassar, and was appointed corporal. He eventually settled in Surakarta on the island of Java, where he worked as a gardener. When he died in 1839, he was around 99 years old. He had survived some of his children and grandchildren.

Jacobus Buttenaer was born on 9 April 1740 in Brugge (Bruges) in Vlaanderen (Flanders). I can't find a crossing to Indonesia in 1767, as the article mentions. However, Jacobus died travel to Batavia (nowadays Jakarta) in 1774.
On March 10, 1774, Jacobus Buttenaer departed from the fortress of Rammekens near Vlissingen (Flushing) aboard the ship “Ouderkerk”, built in 1768. The captain was Johan Splinter Stavorinus. The ship was moored at the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa from June 12 to August 3. Jacobus arrived in Batavia on October 28, 1774.
