The sad life of Hendrik Vaupell (1840-1910)

Hendrik Vaupell was admitted to an asylum for the insane in Zutphen on 12 May 1865. Earlier, he had been living in Deventer. By judgement of the Zutphen District Court of February 15, 1871, Hendrik Vaupell was placed under guardianship for insanity.The guardianship had been requested by his brother-in-law Willem Gelderblom. At that time, Hendrik was still residing in the asylum in Zutphen.

Hendrik Vaupell was born on 26 December 1840 around 23:30 in Zaltbommel as son of Hendrik Vaupell (1783-1847) and his German wife Aleida Catharina Lubeleij (1851). She originated in Neuenhaus, just across the border in Germany.

The younger Hendrik Vaupel had a sister Christina Reintje Vaupell. She was born on February 19, 1833, in Zaltbommel. At the age of 28, on 13 March 1861 in Arnhem, Christina Reintje married assistant-teacher Willem Gelderblom. Willem was born on 15 October 1835 in Horssen as son of teacher Johannes Gelderblom and his wife Hermina Ernste. Christina Reintje and Willem had several children. Christina Reintje died in The Hague on 5 October 1895, aged 62. Willem died on 8 December 1913 in The Hague.
Hendrik and Christina Reintje had an elder brother Lukas Johannes Vaupel who was born in Brussels. He died at the age of 24 in 1851 in Zutphen. Another brother, Gerhard Willem Vaupel, died in 1869 in Hoorn. These children lost their father 62-year-old Hendrik Vaupell on 28 June 1847 in Haarlem. During his lifetime he worked as a saddler in the 2nd Regiment of Dragoons of the Dutch Army.

At the age of 6, the younger Hendrik Vaupel lost his father. Four years later his mother died. Hendrik was 24 years old, when he was admitted to the asylum for the insane. Hendrik died, at the age of 69 , on 14 April 1910 in Zutphen.
